Monsoon Ideas
A fascinating city, Agra is home to some of the most famous buildings of the world – the Taj Mahal, the Agra Fort and the Jama Masijd. The city is rich in natural beauty and lovely Mughal gardens like the Aram Bagh and Mehtab Bagh adorn the city. The city is visited by thousands of tourists every year, who reach here to take a glimpse of the beautiful Taj as well as experience the Mughal grandeur. While Agra has a distinctly tropical climate wherein summers are exceptionally hot, Agra’s charm is further enhanced during the monsoons. The rains result in a definite dip in the temperatures and it is definitely easier to move around the city then. However, since the rainfall is exceptionally heavy, you must carry adequate raingear, including umbrellas and raincoats. Also, since humidity tends to be on the rise at this time, carry comfortable cotton clothing.

Things to see & do
  • Taj Mahal: One of the Seven Wonders of the World and a World Heritage Site, the Taj Mahal needs no introduction. Built by Emperor Shah Jahan for his beloved queen Mumtaz Mahal, the monument is a fine example of love crafted in stone. The structure is an architectural wonder with self-replicating geometry and symmetry of architectural elements. The entire mausoleum, which is created in pure white marble, is decorated with inlaid floral designs and semi-precious stones. The building is particularly beautiful on full moon nights, when the moonlight casts an ethereal appearance, thus making it glow.

  • Agra Fort: Another World Heritage site in Agra, the Fort stands next to the splendid Taj Mahal. A majestic structure itself, the fort was built by the great Mughal emperor Akbar. Built in red sandstone, the fort is crescent- shaped and has a deep moat surrounding the entire outer wall. The fort has within it a number of fascinating buildings. The most notable include the Diwan-e-Am and Diwan-e-Khas (halls of public and private audience), Pearl Mosque, Khaas Mahal, Jehangir's Palace, Sheesh Mahal (mirrored palace), and Musamman Burj.

  • Fatehpur Sikri: Mughal Emperor Akbar built this city about 35 kms from Agra as the then capital of the Mughal Empire. Though now a deserted city, it still retains its magnificent structures that defines it within. Most important of these include the Diwan-i-Am and Diwan-i-Khas, halls of public and private audience, the Panch Mahal, the Jama Masjid and the Dargah of Shaikh Salim Chisti.

  • Itmad-Ud-Daulah's Tomb: The tomb built by Empress Nur Jahan for her father and is made in white marble. The entire structure showcases fine lattice work, motifs and Persian paintings. The building is set amidst a landscaped garden crossed with waterways and walkways.

  • Ram Bagh: The oldest Mughal Garden, it was built by Babur. The garden is exceptionally beautiful and showcases flowers, tanks and walkways.

  • Sikandara: This is famous for the tomb of Akbar, the construction of which was started by Akbar himself and later completed by Jehangir. The tomb is five-storeyed, built in red sandstone and marble and has several gardens inside the compound.

Gourmet Treats
With a long Mughal tradition, Agra is famous for its delicious Mughlai cuisine. Navratan Restaurant, Shivakash Restaurant, Capri Restaurant and Malika Restaurant are some famous eating places in Agra which offer mouth-watering delicacies. Mughal Sheraton, Clarks Shiraz and Taj View are some of the multi-cuisine restaurants in Agra. The city is a haven for chaat lovers too and a number of stalls serve hot and spicy snacks, including pani-puri and golgappas. If you’re looking for some Chinese and continental delights head out to Petals Restaurant and Gallops Fast Food. When in Agra, the Petha sweet and the dalmoth, which is a salted savoury are something, which cannot be missed.

Shopping Delights
Agra is famous not only for its amazing architecture but also for its zardorsi-embroidered fabrics, leather goods, brassware, carpets, and jewelry. Sadar Bazar, Taj Ganj, Kinari Bazar, Munro Road, Pratap Pura and Gwalior Road are bustling markets that sell a host of items – Taj replicas, marble items, jewelry with Mughal designs and embroidered works. Agra is also the best place to shop for some fine carpets and durries too. Shilpagram, Craft Village on the eastern side of Taj Mahal, is a nice place to shop for some authentic handicrafts. Garnering bargaining skills before venturing pout into Agra streets for shopping is highly recommended. .
