Alleppey or Alapuzzha is one of the most exotic backwater locations in Kerala. It’s criss-cross of canals and beaches have rightly earned it the name "Venice of the East". This is also the site of the famous snake boat races and the coir industry. A must-do here – embark on a serene backwater cruise through the river and experience this town at its best. The weather around here is usually pleasant and the climate never stretches to extremes. The months from January to April and August to October are ideal for traveling here. Owing to its location, the place experiences heavy monsoon showers and if you love the rains, it’s the best time to travel here.
 
Things to see & do
  • Kuttanad: Alleppey is called Kuttanad or the Rice Bowl of Kerala because the lush green paddy fields situatedin the heart of the backwater.

  • St. Mary's Church: One of the oldest churches in Kerala, this is believed to be one of the seven churches established by St. Thomas.

  • Arthunkal: The St. Sebastian's Church here is an important Christian pilgrim centre and is the site of the Arthunkal Perunnal, the feast of the patron saint in January.

  • Mannarasala Sree Nagaraja Temple: This ancient temple is dedicated to the serpent God Nagaraja and is headed by a priestess.

  • Krishnapuram Temple: Krishnapuram Temple is a two-storied building and has on display the typical Keralan style of architecture. It is also home to Gajendra Moksham, the largest mural painting.

  • Ambalapuzha Temple: Dedicated to Lord Krishna, the payasam served here is particularly special.

  • Chettikulangara Bhagavathy Temple: This temple is believed to be especially sacred for its miraculous powers of healing any ailment and granting of wishes.

  • Alappuzha Beach: The beach is one of the most popular picnic spots here with its several entertainment facilities. The pier that extends to the sea is over 137 years old.

  • Sea View Park: The Park offers boats for hire and a swimming pool.

  • Karumadikuttan: This is the site of several legends associated with the 11th century statue of Lord Buddha.

  • Punnamada Kayal: This is one of the most visited sites in Alleppey. It is here that the annual Nehru Boat Festival is held. During the months of August-September, the backwaters become crowded with thousands of spectators from across the country to watch this spectacular event. The boats are built to resemble snakes, each boat accommodating 120 competitors who strove for the winning trophy.

  • Backwater Cruise: A must-do here – indulge in a backwater cruise through a vast network of interconnected lakes and canals. There are houseboats fitted with all amenities and which take you through some of the most striking areas.

 
Gourmet Treats
Lots of food joints, if you don’t mind the typical South Indian taste. Kreamkorner offers Indian and Chinese dishes. Arcadia Hotel, has its own restaurant with decent meals. Vembanad Restaurant and Keraleeyam Heritage are good for some authentic South India fare. The food comprises mostly of rice, spicy curries and steamed rice-cake with coconut gratings prepared in bamboo shell. Enjoy a meal in traditional Kerala style, complete with servings on plantain leaves!
 
Shopping Fiesta
Pick up what this place is known for – its coir products. Carpets and other items made with coir are available locally. Alleppey is also known for its spices, pepper, coconut oil, areca nut, cardamom and sugar.
