Monsoon Ideas
With its diverse wildlife and spectacular landscapes, the Corbett National Park lures all. Located at the confluence of the Garhwal and Kumaon Hills, the park has an attractive landscape. Of course, it’s most thrilling resident remains the elusive Big Cat, sightings of which are as rare as it gets. However, you are sure to get your eyes on large herds of elephants and spotted deer. Monsoons make the region even more spectacular as ferns, mushrooms and tall grass cover the landscape. While animal sightings become relatively difficult, you can indulge in rafting, angling and fishing in the Kosi River. Carry adequate raingear if travelling during the monsoons.

Things to see & do
  • Safari: The best way to explore the park would be on a jeep safari or an elephant safari. You can hire a jeep from the jungle entrance that comes along with a guide. While it is definitely a thrill to watch the tiger, sightings here are quite rare and you might have to wait for quite some time before you hear a rustle, spot a pug mark or see a quick dart in the bushes. However, what you would certainly see here are herds of elephants, spotted deer and a vast variety of birds.

  • Angling and Fishing: The Kosi River is an anglers’ paradise and we recommend that you carry your own fishing gear. However, seek out prior permission to fish in the Ramganga and Kosi Rivers. And if you’re lucky enough, you might even get to pose with your prize catch!

  • River Rafting: The rains make the Kosi River swell, thus making it excellent for rafting. Most resorts offer facilities for rafting, river crossing, rappelling and rock climbing.

  • Corbett Waterfall: A great picnic sot, the waterfall is a spectacular sight as it drops from a height of almost 20 meters. Dense forests surround the neighbouring area and there are a number of camping sites here.

  • Kaladhungi Museum: Once Jim Corbett’s bungalow, today it has been turned into a museum that houses memorabilia of the hunter-turned-naturalist. Take a tour of his collections of rifle cases, hats, fishing nets, photographs and letters.

Gourmet Treats
Most of the eating places in Corbett are the restaurants that are attached to hotels. Gurney House is the best place to sample some local delicacies. Apart from Kumaon cuisine, they also serve Indian, Mughlai, Chinese and Continental. Jim’s Grill is a concept restaurant with a machaan-like structure. This would be an all new experience as they make you sit on stools around a tree and serve delicious meals. To enjoy a camp-style barbeque dinner head to Jim’s Jungle Retreat. They host Indian barbeque special dinners. Restaurants attached to Corbett Hideaway Resort and Infinity Resorts serve a variety of multi-cuisine dishes. Non-vegetarian food and alcohol are a strict no within the park limits.

Shopping Fiesta
Don’t forget to pick a ‘Save the Tiger’ t-shirt! Places around Corbett do not have many shopping options, but some wildlife memorabilia can be picked up. Shops at Bijrani Gate and The Tiger Camp Resort in Garjiya sell out wildlife souvenirs, including tiger key chains, tiger photo frames and stuffed tigers.
