Monsoon Ideas
Majestic hills, lush tea gardens, shimmering streams, dense forests – Dooars is everything that’s absolutely natural. Aptly called the Gateway to the Himalayas, Dooars has an endless stretch of dense forests and meandering rivers. The place also abounds in rich biodiversity and wildlife. Take a drive across the town, especially during monsoons when the green tea gardens and low rising hills take an almost ethereal appearance. The jungles are distinctly denser and we recommend that you carry adequate raincoats and umbrellas, along with sturdy walking shoes when visiting here.

Things to see & do
  • Gorumara National Park: A paradise for avian-lovers, the park is home to some of the rarest species of birds like Hornbill, Cuckoos, Minivets, Wood Peckers, Pigeons, Brahmmy Duck. Catch a look at some rare Butterflies like Krishna Peacock, Redpare Jezebel and Kaiser-I-Hind. We recommend that you spend at least a night at the Garati Watch Tower within the park and watch out for the ferocious predators moving around.

  • Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary: Explored best on an elephant, this park lets you spot One-Horned Rhino, Indian Elephant and Royal Bengal Tiger from close quarters.

  • Buxa Tiger Reserve: Home to the rare Bengal Tiger, the reserve has an astounding range of biodiversity. A host of birds have also made this region their home. The region with its hilly terrain and sub-tropical forests has a number of picturesque trekking routes. Book a rest house in the forest for a close-to-nature experience.

  • Mahakal Dham: One of the rarest temples in India, this temple is unique for the fact that an elephant is the god here.

  • Buxa Fort: Associated greatly with the freedom struggle, the Buxa Fort guards one of the eleven entrances to Bhutan. Close to it is the Buxa National Park, which is one of the best places to watch tigers, leopards and a vast range of wild species.

Gourmet Treats
Though limited, the eating out options are fairly decent. Try the local cuisine of the area and preferably, stick to the restaurants within the hotels. Banyan Tree in Hotel Sinclairs is a great multi-cuisine restaurant.

Shopping Fiesta
Mostly, tea is what you’d pick up on your shopping trip here. The numerous tea gardens make and sell several varieties of teas that are neatly packaged. You can also carry some small souvenirs home, like tiger key-chains and tiger t-shirts.
