Monsoon Ideas
A revered city, Dwarka is one of the most ancient cities in India. Believed to have been the capital of the kingdom of Lord Krishna, the city attracts throngs of devotees all the year round. Dwarka is particularly famous for its Dwarkadhish Temple, which is said to be almost 2500 years old. Dwarka can be visited all year through, though monsoons render a different charm to the place. As the rains pour, the city cools considerably and makes it pleasurable to travel around the city. Throw in extra clothing or two if travelling here during the rains.

Things to see & do
  • Dwarkanath Temple: This is the main temple in Dwarka and attracts a large number of devotees to the place. According to a legend, the temple was built by Sambha, Lord Krishna’s grandson. The temple is a richly carved structure of limestone and sand and is five-storeyed resting on 60 pillars. The temple offers a nice view of the nearby flowing Gomti River.

  • Rukmini Temple: Though small in size, the temple is an architectural masterpiece. It is dedicated to Rukmini, Krishna’s most important wife, and an incarnation of Goddess Lakshmi. The interiors of the temple are aesthetically decorated with attractive paintings depicting Rukmini’s pastimes with Krishna.

  • Nageshwar Temple: Another important temple here is the Nageshwar Temple. It is devoted to Lord Shiva and several legends attached to it. It is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, the sacred abodes of Lord Shiva, and houses a giant idol of Lord Shiva.

  • Dwarka Peeth: Dwarka Peeth or Dwarka Matha is a popular destination of pilgrimage for Hindus. It is dedicated to Krishna and is one of the four mathas that was founded by Adi Sankaracarya.
