A small town lying in the foothills of the Himalayas, Kalimpong has a magical charm. A journey to the place is an amazing experience as you traverse thorough some of the most scenic routes in the country. The majestically flowing River Teesta along the roadside is particularly enthralling. Abounding in natural beauty, the town is home to lovely gardens and gives panoramic views of the mighty Himalayas. Things to see & do
  • Durpin Dara: The highest point in Kalimpong, it offers spectacular views of the entire town. It also provides impressive views of the Himalayas and the rivers flowing in the plains below.

  • Zong Dhog Palri Fo Brang Monastery: This is an 18th century monastery, which belongs to the Yellow Hat sect of Lamas. Situated on Tirpai hill, the monastery is noted for its murals and paintings.

  • The MacFarlane Church: This is an educational institution built on Deolo Hill. It was founded by Dr. John A. Graham and has a home for orphans, a dairy, bakery, poultry farm and vegetable gardens.

  • Kalimpong Arts and Craft Centre: The institution sells out bags, purses, pictorial wall panels, screens, embroidered bags and scrolls, made of Bhutanese, Lepchas and Sikkimese designed cloth. A good place to pick souvenirs from.

  • The Lion’s Golf Course: A golf course lay by the Army, it is set in a picturesque location. The beautiful and undulating slopes at Durpin Ridge give it a perfect backdrop. Several varieties of plants further beautify the place.

  • Darmodaya Vihar: This is a Buddhist Vihar that houses an idol of Buddha which was presented by Buddhists of Burma. The Vihar is managed by the members of Kalimpong Dharmodaya Sabha. It serves as the residence of Nepalese Buddhist monks.

  • Kalibari: It is a famous Hindu temple in Kalimpong, dedicated to Goddess Kali and housing a huge idol of the deity. It attracts tourists and devotees in large numbers.

 
Gourmet Treats
Kalimpong doesn’t offer many shopping options, but still make time to visit the Kalimpong Bazaar. Things that can be picked from Kalimpong include bags, purses, pictorial wall panels, screens, embroidered bags and scrolls made of Bhutanese, Lepchas and Sikkimese designed cloth.
 
Shopping Fiesta
The main cuisine of Kalimpong is a blend of a number of cuisines of various cultures, including European, Nepalese and Tibetan cuisines. When in Kalimpong do not forget to sample its famous Kalimpong cheese and Kalimpong lollipops, which are a specialty of this town. Other delicacies worth trying are Gundruk, a popular Nepali dish, and mouthwatering Tibetan momos and thukpa.
