	Kanyakumari, known for its exotic location is a favourite tourist spot. Being the southern-most point of India, the city has three great seas kissing the land. Surrounded by hills and bordered by colorful sea-shores, Kanyakumari has a unique charm. A center for art, culture, civilization and pilgrimage, the city is home to a large number of temples, churches and other edifices. Kanyakumari is most renowned for the beautiful views of the sunrise and sunset on the sea. While summers tend to be humid in Kanyakumari, monsoons make the region appealing. Occasional showers are common, so pack in your best raingear when traveling to Kanyakumari during the rains.


	Things to see & do
	Kumari Amman: The temple is dedicated to Goddess Parvati as Devi Kanya who did penance to get Lord Shiva’s hand. The deity is believed to be the protector of India’s coatline. She is adorned with brilliant diamond nose ring, which shines out to the sea. Vivekananda Rock Memorial: It was crafted in different architectural styles on rocks that jut out from the sea. It marks the place where Swami Vivekananda meditated and developed his philosophy. Close to the memorial is the small temple called ‘Sripada Parai’ where the footprints of the goddess are believed to have fallen. You can take a ferry service to the rocks. Mahatma Gandhi Memorial: Built in memory of Gandhiji, the memorial is built in exceptionally modern architecture. An unusual feature of this place is that every year on his birthday, the sun rays fall at exactly the same place where the urn was kept for public viewing before immersion. Thiruvalluvar Statue: The magnanimous statue is 133 ft tall and has stairs inside that provide a great view of the sea and the land. Suchindram Temple: Located 13 kms from Kanyakumari, Suchindram Temple is dedicated to a deity who personifies the combined forces of Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma. The temple has a striking gopuram, musical pillars and an excellent statue of the Hanuman, together with several artifacts dating to different periods. Bay Watch (Water Theme Amusement Park): This is an amusement park for a total family delight! It has several water-themed rides and slides that provide nonstop thrill. Muttom Beach: The beach is located about 32 kms from the city and is famous for its sunset views. Known for its landscaping, watch out especially for the high rocks that dip into the sea. Chothavilai Beach: This is located about 10 kms from Kanyakumari and is one of the best natural beaches. The water is shallow and there are high sand dunes behind. Government Museum: The Government Museum has a collection of old coins, whalebones, tribal objects, bronze sculptures and woodcarvings.


	Gourmet Treats
	A number of restaurants, though most are vegetarian. Indian and Chinese food is available near the temple at Hotel Saravana. The dosas are exceptional at Sri Ramadev Restaurant. For excellent non vegetarian fare, Manickhan Tourist Home is among the better known ones.


	Shopping Fiesta
	Not much of a shoppers stop, though you can pick up shell items and coral reefs. Coir and wooden handicrafts are unique buys. You can also pick up packets of multi-coloured sand, which is unique to this place.
