Monsoon Ideas
A quiet little town with a distinct old-world charm, Kasauli is an attractive tourist destination in the hill state of Himachal Pradesh. Gabled houses, palatial bungalows and scores of pretty gardens and lovely orchards have preserved its colonial ambience. Take long walks along the cobbled streets, which wind along the tall oaks and majestic pines and enjoy a drive around the hilly slopes admiring the verdant natural beauty of the wild flowers that turn the landscape simply breathtaking. Carry your umbrellas, raincoats, and walking shoes if you’re travelling in the rain, so that the almost-continuous showers don’t stop you from exploring the region.

Things to see & do
  • Monkey Point: The highest point in Kasauli, this spot offers panoramic views of the plains lying below. A temple here is dedicated to Lord Hanuman, who is said to have stopped here en route to the Sanjivani Hill.

  • Dharampur: Located amidst fragrant pines, Dharampur is home to one of the best tuberculosis treatment hospitals in the country.

  • Sanawar: This place is home to some of the best educational institutions in the country, the most famous being the Lawrence School. The school is almost a hundred years old and was founded by Sir Henry M. Lawrence and his wife Honoria and is now one of the most prestigious institutions of the country.

  • Christ Church: A magnificent piece of architecture, the Christ Church stands tall amidst chestnut and fir trees. More than 150-years old, the church has an imposing structure and some ornate carvings.

  • Baba Balak Nath Temple: Located on top of the Graner Hill, it is one of the most famous temples in Kasauli. The temple was constructed by a local resident Vijay Kumar. It is believed that Baba Balak Nath appeared to Vijay in his dream and asked him to construct a temple in this place. The temple is mostly visited by childless couples to seek blessings for children.

  • Shirdi Sai Baba Mandir: This is yet another famous temple in Kasauli. Dedicated to Sai Baba of Shirdi, the temple attracts a large number of devotees. The temple enshrines an idol of Sai Baba while a constantly burning flame in the temple signifies his inextinguishable divine power.

Gourmet Treats
Kasauli does not have many big restaurants. But that does not mean there is a dearth of eating places. A number of eateries and stalls dot the streets and lanes of the market area. Authentic Himachali food can be sampled at those innumerable stalls and small shops in the lower Mall area. The smacky bun-samosas and piping hot ginger tea are a must-have here. The tandoori rotis and ma-ki-dal with a typical Himachali local flavor served in the dhabas are delicious too. Major hotels in Kasauli have their restaurants, which serve decent food. Hotel Alsaia has a multi-cuisine restaurant that serves a wide variety of specialty dishes. Giani Hotel serves special tandoori items, anda-toast and lassi. Hemkunth Resorts has a multi cuisine restaurant that serves a wide variety of Himachali food. The restaurant at Hotel R. Maidens has on its menu some of the most exotic of dishes. North Indian fare can be tried at the restaurant at Hotel Bird View Resort. The restaurant at Heritage Hotel is famous for its Rajasthani-style cuisine which is cooked in rich spices.

Shopping Fiesta
No big branded or stores or happening malls. Yet Kasuali has a lot to shop for. Innumerable small shops and stalls line the Upper and Lower Malls, which sell a number of unique items, particularly gifts and souvenirs. One of the best picks in Kasauli is the locally crafted handmade shawls and other handicrafts. A Tibetan Bazaar is held at the Old Market where Tibetan wood items are put on sale. Don’t forget to pick some homemade fresh fruit jams made of plums, peaches and apricots prepared by the locals.
