Monsoon Ideas
Located away from the usual din of flocking tourists, the green hills of Kerala are some of the best-kept secrets of this God’s Own Country. Filled with lush green vegetation, milky waterfalls, brooks, springs, lakes and plantations, these hills are also home to numerous wildlife sanctuaries, which house some of the most unusual species of animals and birds. Munnar was earlier the summer resort of the British and derives its name from the three rivers Madupetti, Nallathanni and Periavaru, which flow through it. Munnar is also the site of the Neelakurinji, a blue flower which blooms only once every twelve years and covers the entire hillside in its hue. Plan a trip here between June to August when it pours and the beauty of this place increases manifold. An umbrella or a raincoat is a must for travel in this time. However, traveling by road can get a little tricky considering the rains, so ensure you plan ahead and collect adequate information.

Things to see & do
  • Eravikulam (Rajamalai) National Park:Located 45 mins from Munnar, this National Park is home to the endangered species of mountain goats, Nilgiri Thar. Among other wildlife, it also houses the Atlas Moth lion-tailed macaque, leopards and tigers. The hills of Rajamalai are also the site where the Neelakurinji flowers bloom once every 12 years.

  • Anamudi Peak:Located within the Eravikulam National Park, the Anamudi Peak (2695 m) is the highest peak in South India and its slopes abound in all kinds of flora and fauna. It is also an ideal spot for trekking and facilities are provided for tourists to walk up to Anamudi.

  • Mattupetti Dam: located 10 kms from Munnar, this is a popular site for picnics, boating and horse riding.

  • Mattupetti Indo-Swiss Farm: Also known as Mattupetti Cattle Village, the climate and abundance of fodder makes it the ideal location for the Indo-Swiss dairy farm. This dairy farm is unique with its over 100 varieties of high yeildling cattle.

  • Echo Point: Located 15 kms from Munnar, Echo Point is a small lake set amidst the hills. It attributes its name to the fact that every call made from a spot on the lake embankment is returned several times by the echo from the surrounding hills.

  • Top Station: 37 kms from Munnar, Top Station is located on the Kerala and Tamil Nadu border and offers great views of the Western Ghats. Regular buses ply to Top Station from Munnar.

  • Marayoor: Around 40 kms from Munnar, it is the only place in Kerala which has a natural growth of sandalwood trees, natural caves with murals, and relics from stone age civilisation.

  • The Christ Church: The Church is located in Old Munnar and though the exteriors are worn out, the interiors continue to retain their beauty.
