Monsoon Ideas
Shillong or Scotland of the East is one of the most romantic cities in the northeast. . The city owes its name to “Leishyllong” - the Superpower or God who is believed to reside on the Shillong peak overlooking the city. All along the city, splendid views of rolling hills, tall pine trees greet you. Add to this the pleasant climate that’s so typical of this place. Summer are generally hot, though and winters are cold. The monsoons arrive in June and it rains all through August. If you love the season, it’s the best time for you. Don your best gumboot, raincoats and get ready to go sloshing through!

Things to see & do
  • Shillong Peak: An ideal picnic spot, it is the highest spot in the state and offers a beautiful view of the countryside. Especially watch it during the evening, when the city lights twinkle like a million stars.

  • Cherrapunjee: Located about 56 km from Shillong, it was once the recipient of the highest amount of rainfall. It is pleasant to drive through it to catch glimpses of roaring waterfalls that plunge into bottomless gorges.

  • Ward's Lake: Located in the heart of the city, the lake is popular for short evening walks and boating excursions. It’s quite a picturesque experience, considering the white wooden Japanese-like bridge that stretches over it and the fishes that throng to feed on the food.

  • Umiam Lake: Umiam Khwan is a better known lake, which offers water sports facilities including sailing, water skiing and water scooter.

  • Lady Hydari Park: This park is home to a mini zoo and butterfly museum with several colourful species preserved within it. The perfectly landscaped Lady Hydari Park is thronged with several varieties of roses and flowers.

  • Botanical Garden: Located close to the Ward’s Lake, this garden is secluded though an excellent spot for watching a range of indigenous and exotic plants.

  • Waterfalls: Several beautiful waterfalls ideal for an evening walk. Visit the Sweet Falls located near Happy Valley and the Spread Eagle Falls near Polo Ground that has been named so because it looks like an eagle with its wings spread out.

Gourmet Treats
Its special fares include Chinese and Tibetan. Try the Elgin and Bamboo Hut Chinese restaurants for some piping hot momos. The Jadoh stall sells a rice-and-pork preparation. Other well-known eateries in the city are Kimpoo and Kowloon, which serve Chinese, and Broadway, which serves multi-cuisine fare.

Shopping Fiesta
The best bet to shop is at Shillong’s Bara Bazaar and Police Bazaar, where a local weekly market is held. Forest-produced honey would be a particularly good buy. You can also pick up small souvenirs, as handmade knives, cotton bags, shawls, bamboo cutlery and other bamboo crafts. Also try some local fruit as sayang and saflang, sold wrapped in banana leaves. From the Government Emporium, pick up the traditional Khasi skirt in silk.
