Monsoon Ideas
It’s not a difficult guess as to why Udaipur is considered one of the most romantic cities of Rajasthan. Centered around Lake Pichola, Udaipur definitely has an unusual charm. This city is famous for its lakes, palaces and temples. In addition, Udaipur is also an excellent place to shop for authentic handicrafts – look out for hand-woven clothes, embroideries, mirror works and other Rajasthani handicrafts! Anytime between September and March is good to visit Udaipur. Though it does not experience much rain, the temperature at this time takes a definite dip! Whatever rains it receives, fill up the Lake Pichola almost to the brim and you can enjoy boating sessions and a visit to the Lake Palace located in the middle of it.

Things to see & do
  • City Palace Complex: This is the most recognized structures located on the eastern bank of Lake Pichola. Having undergone several renovations and additions, today it is a complex of beautiful buildings built in granite and marble. Among the many palace buildings inside is theMoti Mahal or Peral Palace, which is decorated in colored glass.

  • City Palace Museum: The older sections of the palace were converted to a museum, which houses artifacts dating to the Mewar period. Some highlights of the palace are the Kaanch ki Burj, which is decorated with glasswork, the Mor Chowk decorated in glass-mosaic peacocks, the Zenana Mahal built for palace ladies and a gallery displaying several paintings.

  • Crystal Gallery: Located next to the City Palace in the Fateh Prakash Palace, this gallery houses a splendid collection of crystals. These were ordered by Maharaja Sajjan Singh and include tables, sofa sets, dressers, fountains and even beds besides a range of bowls, decanters and perfume bottles.

  • Lake Pichola: The central system of this city, Lake Pichola is most enthralling during the rains when the water fills it up completely. It houses within it the much popular Lake Palace, which is a heritage hotel today. Another island palace in the lake is the Jagmandir Palace, which has some exquisite carvings of rows of elephants and a carved chhatri in grey and blue. A must-do here – catch a splendid view of the landscape around in a boat ride that takes you around the entire lake.

  • Jagdesh Temple: One of the largest temples in Udaipur, it has a black stone image of Lord Vishnu. Also present is a brass image of Garuda. The external walls of the temple are covered with stone carvings of alligators, elephants, horsemen and celestial beings.

  • Saheliyon ki Bari: This garden was a popular relaxing retreat for royal ladies. The garden is full of fountains, tiny pools and marble elephants.

  • Sajjangarh: This is the site of the Sajjangarh Palace, which affords a view of the Udaipur and Aravalli hills. Also located here is the Sajjangarh Wildlife Sanctuary, which provides a sanctuary to the Chital, Sambar, Wild Boar, and Blue Bull, along with several varieties of reptiles and birds.

  • ShilpGram: It is a craftsman’s village and is a form of a museum, which has selected arts and crafts. Also check out the exquisite terracotta work mainly in dark red and dark brown sand material along with several wooden carvings. This is also the site of a craft festival during winter.

  • Fateh Sagar Lake: This artificial lake is located north of Lake Pichola and houses within it the Nehru Island and an islet bearing a solar observatory rises from the lake.

  • Bagore ki Haveli: Located on the Pichola waterfront and the Gangori Ghat, the palace has more than hundred rooms that display costumes and modern art. The interiors are done with glass and mirrors. It also has a fine example of a Mewar Painting on the walls of the Queen's Chamber.

  • Bharatiya Lok Kala Mandal: This is an exceptional museum of folk arts, where you can also watch amazing puppet shows.

  • The Vintage Car Collection: The Garden Hotel here has an interesting variety of vintage cars in its garden. These cars that includes the likes of Cadillac and Roll Royce, were once possessed and used by Maharanas of Udaipur. The other models were added later as part of their collection.

Gourmet Treats
There are several rooftop restaurants in Udaipur that offer standard Indian, Chinese and Continental fare. Ambrai Restaurant outside Chand Pol is an excellent open-air option on the banks of Lake Pichola. It specializes in Rajasthani cuisine, including mutton soweta, a dish that uses corn. If you wish to savour Rajasthani fare, head out to Santosh Daal Baati Bhojanalaya at Suraj Pol where they serve dal baati and churma. The Garden Hotel Restaurant offers only a vegetarian thali cooked without onion and garlic. Also try out the buffet dinner at Lake Palace Hotel restaurant. Remember to book ahead though.

Shopping Fiesta
The lanes between the City Palace and Jagdish Temple are lined with shops that sell embroidered or block-printed fabrics, jewellery, pigment-paintings and carved wooden artifacts. A good place for authentic Rajasthani wares is the Shilpgram.
