The original name of this village was Kolongutt, however, the word is thought to have become distorted with the invasion of the Portuguese. This town has a permanent population of about 16,000 people. Calangute is divided into a ward system and comprises of several wards. This region is one of the most popular places for tourists, which is why Calangute has a large number of hotels, guest houses and resorts. These are available at different rates, making it the perfect place for leisure and business travellers. Apart from water sports, Calangute offers visitors a number of other things to do. There are numerous shops where tourists can shop for all kinds of things and there are also several cafes and bars around which are perfect for drinking and dining. Also found here is one of the more popular Tibetan jewellery markets that draw people here. It is home to the largest beach in the north of Goa and offers visitors a number of water sport activities like skiing, parasailing, banana boat rides and many others.
