We drove from Bangalore to Edakkal hermitage. The road is good except for the last 100 metres which is very steep. The staff were very helpful in giving directions to the resort so we had no problem locating the place. The parking space is a bit cramped. We reached there late around 4 PM and were damn hungry. The staff were kind enough to get us some bread toast and coffee and didn't charge anything extra for the meal. We had booked one night in the tree house and 3 nights in the cottage Chauvet. The tree house was neatly maintained and had a great view. Only problem was the presence of monkeys. They were trying to get in by pushing open the mesh windows which were stuck to the wall using velcro. It would have been better if the windows were made of plastic/wire meshes and fixed to the walls. Due to some confusion, the cottage Chauvet was double booked and so we were allotted a new cottage on the second day and offered Chauvet cottage for the 3rd and 4th night. We found the new cottage allocated to us to be good and decided to stay there itself. Positive aspects: 1) Small resort: There are only 8 cottages in the resort. So it doesn't feel crowded. 2) Staff: The staff are very Warm and friendly and make you feel at home 3) Neat Rooms: All rooms are clean and well maintained. 4) Food: We enjoyed the food very much. It was like home food and not oily/spicy like typical restaurant food. Negative aspects: 1) Location: The resort is on the road leading to the edakkal caves and so it is very noisy. There is the constant noise of people and jeeps going to the caves. On the first day of our stay, there was a festival in a nearby temple and they were playing loud music well past 10 PM. 2) Distance from other tourist places: Unless you plan to visit edakkal caves, there is not much that you can do here. Almost all tourist spots like pookot lake, kurva island etc are about 1.5 hours drive from this place. It is best if you have your own verhicle. The resort can arrange jeeps for day trips but it is quite expensive. 3) Not suitable for families with small children and elders: The resort doesn't have much moving space due to the rocky terrain. The restaurant is on the other side of the road and it is a steep 50 metre climb. Families with toddlers and elders will find it difficult to walk up to the restaurant and they don't have room service. 4) Candle light dinner inside the cave was a nice experience but it would have been better if they had planned in such a way that each family gets to dine in the cave exclusively. They served 4 families at a time inside the cave, which took away the charm of the experience. We had gone there during a long weekend, and they gave the candle light dinner to all the families on the first day itself. Instead if they had staggered it across 3 days. If you go during weekdays, you may be lucky to get an exclusive candle light dinner.
