Monsoon Do’s
Kovalam is, without doubt, Kerala’s most visited destination. It is defined by the three crescent-shaped beaches, which are separated by rocky cliffs. Add to this the whole range of Ayurveda centres that leave you completely rejuvenated. Once a quiet beach retreat, today, Kovalam has all the frills that come with being the most popular beach, including seaside beach cafes. You can visit this whenever you want, monsoons being no exception. In fact the south-west monsoons kick start from Kovalam. It is accompanied by thunder and lightening before moving inland, a sure relief from the scorching summer heat. Just carry your rain-gear and heed the signs on the beaches that inform you of the high-tides and you surely have an unforgettable experience.

Things to see & do
  • Beaches: Known for its endless miles of beaches, the Lighthouse Beach is the most popular. It gets its name from the Vizhinjam Lighhouse, which stands on a rocky promontory. Though not open to tourists, it throws off beams of light regularly at night. The Hawa Beach is a cleaner one and is separated from the Lighthouse Beach by another promontory. Ashok Beach is Kovalam’s most popular beaches and is home to the Government Guest House and the Halcyon Castle. Azhimalathura Beach is another long stretch of beach and is the only place in Kerala where the sea does not enter the coast, but actually recedes. The Pulinkudi-Azhimala Shiva Temple is located on a hill close to the sea.

  • Vizhinjam Village: Vizhinjam is a fishing village located 2 km south of Kovalam. The Cave Temple near this houses a one-celled shrine inside and is adorned with half complete carvings of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi. The Vizhinjam Fishing Harbour is one of the busiest fishing harbours in the district.

  • Aquarium: The Marine Aquarium houses a wide range of marine wealth, including the squirrelfish, moon wrasse, butterfly fish, giant turtles, triggerfish and sharks.

  • Chowara: This is another fishing village located 8 km south of Kovalam. The hilltop Chowara Ayyappa Temple overlooks a beach. Catch a view of the wide stretch of white beach, the sea and kites and eagles present in the area.

  • Vellayani Lake: This lake is one of the two freshwater lakes in Kerala. You can explore this calm water on a country boat available for hire. This lake becomes particularly busy during the boat race taking place at Onam. The Vellayani Devi Temple is located close to the lake. Every three years, it hosts a festival that goes on for 54 days.

  • Valliathura Pier: This pier is used by local fisherman of Kovalam. It is unique in that during monsoons, you can watch fisherman throw their catamarans and swim up to them.

  • Angling: For those interested in fishing, you can hire fishing boats and catamarans for an hour or two.

  • Ayurveda: Kovalam’s prime attraction is the number of ayurveda resorts and centres, which are growing every year. Opt for classified centres or those at reputed hotels.

Gourmet Treats
Food will never be a problem here considering that all hotels have their own restaurants which provide authentic Kerala cuisine, especially seafood. Check out the several good restaurants along the beaches, including Sea Face Dosa Camp and Lonely Planet, which serves vegetarian South Indian food. For sweet lovers, there is also a German Bakery, that is famous for its fresh baked brown bread, apple crumble, banana muffins and cinnamon rolls.

Shopping Fiesta
Shells and shell-products are most common here. Also buy paintings, carpets, metal work and woodwork articles. The State Emporium sells small rosewood elephants and articles made of sandalwood, rosewood, ebony, screwpine, bamboo and banana fibre leaf along with batik wall hangings, lovely shells and jewellery boxes.
