Standing high on a cliff on the banks of the Ganges, Garhmukteshwar boasts of a glorious past and a religious tradition. This revered town is known since the days of Mahabharata and Puranas. It is believed to have been a part of Hastinapur, the capital of the Kauravas. Garhmukteshwar derives its name from the chief temple in the town, the Mukteshwar Temple, which is dedicated to Goddess Ganga who is actually worshipped here in four temples. • Mukteshwar Mahadeva Temple: The most famous temple in the town, Garh Mukteshwar derives its name from this temple. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva and the river goddess, Ganga. It is one of the four temples in the area dedicated to the Ganges. An important feature of the temple is the presence of 80 Sati pillars which mark places where Hindu widows committed Sati.

• Mosque of Ghiyas-ud-din Balban: Another noted building in the town is the mosque built by Ghiyas-ud-din Balban, the founder of Mughal Empire in India. The mosque bears an inscription in Arabic dating 682 Hijri or 1283 A.D.

• The Fort: The Fort in Garhmukteshwar is undoubtedly an impressive structure. This ancient fort does not chronicle its origin, but was rebuilt by Maratha General Mir Bhawan. It was later taken over by the British who housed the District Administration there.
