Within the panoramic Kumaon region, the district of Nainital is blessed with beauteous splendor. This popular summer retreat attracts innumerable tourists especially during the hot months. The entire landscape is dotted with cottages, villas and bungalows and its abundance of snow-capped peaks, verdant valleys and crystal lakes beckon you. Named after Goddess Naini, it is rightfully known as the Lake District of India, the Naini Lake being the centre of all activities, especially boating. This lake town is surrounded by pine trees and offers interesting walks along pine forest trails. Since it is well within driving distance from Delhi, the town gets rather loud in the summer season. But you can be different – walk around the mall, try some boating or simply take in the fabulous views.

Naini Lake: The lifeblood of this lake town, legend has it that the deep green lake is one of the emerald green eyes of Parvati, Shiva's wife. It is believed that the modern Naina Devi Temple at the northern end of the lake is the spot where her eye fell, after Vishnu chopped up her body and scattered it all over to stop Shiva's cosmic dance of destruction. Enjoy a rowboat or pedal boat ride around the lake or hire a yacht from the Nainital Boat Club. Not just the lake, there’s much to do on the promenade too. Shops and restaurants line the entire edge of the lake and you can hunt for can shawls, local handicrafts, honey, fruit juices and pickles.
Snow View: An exciting activity for all is the ropeway Aerial Express to Snow View (7447 ft). Catch majestic views of the Himalayas dominated by the sacred Nanda Devi. Alternately, you can also ride up to Snow View on ponies or horses available at the north end of the Mall.
Dorothy’s Seat: Also known as Tiffin’s Top, it derives its name from of an English lady Mrs. Kellet Dorothy, who was killed in an air crash. Tiffin Top is at a short walk of about 4 km from the lake and provides an excellent view of the Himalayas and the city.
