A slice of paradise in North Goa A slice of paradise in North Goa

by Simplefern on

Someone wise said that the best things are hiding in plain sight. Chorao island is such a place and this villa is the best of Chorao. This island is in north goa and has 3 connections to the mainland - 2 ferries from 2 different ferry points (Ribandar ferry point near Panjim charging Rs 10 per car per trip and Pomburpa near North Goa charging Rs 7 per car per trip) and a bridge connecting the picturesque Bardez and Penha De Franca areas (through Aldona) [Hot tip- add Watervista residences as a stop and then your destination to take the bridge route]. While we never had to wait more than 5 mins for a ferry (total ride time - 10 mins on Ribandar ferry and 3 mins on pompburpa), we really enjoyed the open roads and winding lanes through the villages and often took the bridge route which is safe and scenic. The ferries literally run like Mumbai local, one is almost waiting to dock while one fills up all the time until 12 am after which the ferry plies specially for you at Rs. 100 a trip (just signal a ferry with headlights) Now about the property... The villa is a carefully renovated 1903 built Portuguese style ancestral home of Charles and hes put great care in keeping the soul of the place intact while providing the modern amenities required for a comfortable living. We WFHed and e-schooled from here in February with hectic offices calendars and extracurricular and school classes On zoom without a problem. The pool is the highlight of the place (tying with the house manager whos a treasure) which is a good size and an even depth of 5 ft lined with grass and champa trees and fan palms. The sustainable landscaping gives this place the feel of an oasis with a view of the jungle! The fruit trees are laden with fruit and birds sing all the time like in a Disney movie! The property can easily accommodate 10 persons with room to spare. The property had no electricity issues (no more than 3 power cuts and no longer than 20 mins) and good water pressure and hot water in the taps and showers all the time. Bombay and Delhi kids will balk at the room size never mind that the view from the 2 rooms on the first floor can really floor you! The resident man Friday, Bishnu, is now a great friend of the family. He is a caring and gentle soul. His attention to our comfort and needs has spoilt us rotten and nothing was too much for him. His bbqing skills (theres a weber grill on premises!) are unparalleled and he has some lovely guitar tunes and a voice to match it! Hes an exceptional cook and a genuinely caring person that made fast friends with our 5 year old! To give an example of the care he showered on us - 1) we were discussing amongst ourselves when 2 days remained for our stay that weve bot sampled any vada pao and Bishnu shot out like an arrow to surprise us with some! 2) we forgot a snack box and Bishnu caught up with us on our way to the airport to give it to us! The Maggis and chips and cokes were steadily flowing as theres grocery stores a short walk ahead (Bishnu is every happy to help as well). We also got amazon prime deliveries here and all were delivered without a glitch. Provisions therefore are not a problem here. Charles, the owner, was very kind and very thoughtful. He really helped us with keep close and clear communication and helpful tips on dining nearby (we wanted to avoid crowds but not compromise on quality Goan fare). Charles was super kind and doted on us with authentic Goan sweets twice (Hes a bona fide expert)! Hes been very thoughtful in placing very interesting books in the in house library (whodunits! Yay!) and lovely toys for juniors (our 5 year old loved them!) his daughters were very kind in sharing their kids magazines with ours as our daughter ran out of books 4 days into our stay. As yo I may know now, the island houses the bird sanctuary but with a wonderfully green property we had a front row view to visits from peacocks, peahens, partridges, egrets(!), different kinds of sparrows, hummingbirds, magpies, woodpeckers and kingfishers. There were butterflies too <3 We are already saving up for our 2nd long stay and recommend you do too

What a place What a place

What a team Charles has put together to make Island villa stay a most memorable one! Right from when we signed up for it, Charles was in touch giving us tips and ideas. He shared a birders number when we requested. Bishnu and Raghu make up the team who take care of you upon arrival. I would agree with Charles suggestion of renting a car if you are going to go around Goa with a base at the villa. We ended up paying a lot for taxis. The house is a beautiful restored Portuguese villa, with period furniture and paintings, with a long tree lined cobblestone path leading up to it. It is surrounded by greenery. It is quiet except for birdsong. A delightful swimming pool beckoned. There are plenty of spaces for leisure around the house and overlooking the garden. The food was simply outstanding. It was tasty and served with so much love and attention. It was home cooking at its best. The highlight was the barbecue dinner which Charles had prepared specially for us. Bishnu is very knowledgeable and helpful and very enterprising. House has elegant decor and comfortable beds, large bedrooms and nice bathrooms. The wifi has a reasonable usage limit and that is not a bad thing. Very few networks work on the island and hence it may be good to get a SIM of one that works if you have to stay connected. Bird life was fantastic on the island. I highly highly recommend a stay at Island villa- for a home stay. Thank you Charles.

Most gorgeous property! Most gorgeous property!

Lets start off with saying, it was one of the most amazing places Ive ever stayed out. Everything was just perfect. The pool is huge and a highly instagrammable spot. Its truly a home away from home. And I would 10000% recommend Island pool villa! Charles is extremely kind and helpful and so is Bishnu! All the home cooked meals are so yummy that they keep you wanting more. And theyre also pet friendly! Which was a great + for us!
