This time last year we were in the final stages of preparations for our visit to Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Most of this trip was to be spent in Tamil Nadu but we had to divert to Kerala so we could stay in our much loved Dewalokam. As ever we had a wonderful five days- the most comfortable and well equipped room with the addition of a Welcome Back runner on the bed, superb and generous food, beautifully served in the open air with candles and lights in the trees. Amazing, included visits out that we have done before but they are always fresh thanks to the staff who lead, Ajil, Prince and Manu. A new one this time as we attended an evening religious festival in a nearby village. So many people all smiling and welcoming and a wonderful atmosphere not to mention the joy of a tuktuk drive, fortunately before and not after dinner. Our lovely always smiling women who look after the rooms and assist us gently through the massage. Fabulous cookery sessions as Sudeesh the chef demonstrates with elegance and charm and makes it all look so so easy. Paul leading early morning magical yoga and of course Jose and Sinta who work tirelessly to make a perfect experience. Writing this really hurts as we were starting to plan a visit that would have begun tomorrow when the pandemic struck. We worry for all the people of Kerala, the Homestay owners, people they employ, the wonderful drivers and the many folk who stop to talk to us and welcome us in Gods own country. Please God that we can visit you again in happier times, love to you all, Jan and Julie

My mum and I had the most incredible stay in this beautiful place. The hosts and all helpers are friendly welcoming and couldn't do more to make you're stay perfect. The food is perfect. We met so many lovely new people at the lovely open terrace dinners. This place is inspiring and peaceful with all the incredible home grown produce and measures of self sustainability. We cannot wait to come back. Anjnee and Usha

Excellent stay! Excellent stay!

We stayed three nights at Dewalokum and loved it. Jose and Sinta were perfect hosts and organised spice, village and farm walks which were all very enjoyable. Our room was good and the facilities excellent including a pool and hammocks by the river. The food was delicious and the evening meal was outside under the stars. Thank you to all the lovely smiley staff for a perfect stay. Trish and Dan.

Beyond our expectations! Beyond our expectations!

This farmstay is superbly run by Jose and Cinta - and their wonderful team of 21. Everything is of the highest standard, our room was superb and spotlessly clean. The food was amazing and plenty of it! Do attend the cooking class at 6pm. There are activities and a very clean swimming pool - soo good considering the temperature in March in Kerala! There is a warmth and family atmosphere about this place. Most activities and dining are communal- about 14 people when we visited, so you do need to be sociable to maximise your enjoyment. Having said that, during the day, guests can do their own thing if they want. The river is clean enough to swim in. Wifi is good but patchy at times. You will not regret your stay here- it is simply amazing and one of the best we have experienced

"Something rarer than luxury"

by Patrick M on

Jose, the owner of this homestay, tells us this was our fifth visit. It only has ten or eleven rooms and is extremely popular, so even booking 10 months ahead there was a limited number of slots where we book ourselves in for three nights! Indeed we juggled pretty much everything else around Dewalokams availability. Thats all the more remarkable, given that its rather the odd man out on our itineraries. Most of our other favourite haunts are distinctly more luxurious, but this address offers something rarer than luxury. What exactly that is, is hard to define The rooms are simple, though large, well air-conditioned and well-equipped with all you need including fridges and tea-making equipment. The food is superb and served communally, which means you take the rough with the smooth in terms of company, but weve made several friends here. The gardens are lovely, with a nice pool and even more important a lovely, tranquil river to swim in. The tour of the farm and spice garden is fascinating (the best of its kind that weve known) and the other local escorted walks (all included free of charge) are also a nice low-key way to spend some relaxing days. Borrowing bikes to cycle round the nearby villages was also fun. The staff are all local amateurs (no hotel management degrees here!) but everyone not least the lovely army of smiling ladies who service the rooms contributes greatly to the sense of gentle well-being. But ultimately, I suppose its the warmth and sincerity of the owners welcome (even that of their children!) that draws us back more than anything. Over the years weve come to see Jose and Sinta as genuine friends, but the care and attentiveness that they show to every new arrival is very special. Go there, if you can get in!!
