Holi festival at great hotel in Jaipur Holi festival at great hotel in Jaipur

by 56bobg on

After being greeted by the owner, Mr. Singh, we were shown to our room, which turned out to be the bridal suite! Mr. Singh was a gregarious host, very knowledgeable about the history of his house and Jaipur. He was determined that all his guests should enjoy the Holi festival, and arranged for a marionette show, followed by the lighting of a huge bonfire, which everyone danced around. The next day, there were plates of coloured powders for us all to throw at each other, in the spirit of Holi. It was enormous fun. This was followed by a delicious lunch. We definitely would recommend staying at Dera Mandawa. Mr. Singh is a true gentleman, eager to share his home, of which he is so proud, with you.

Quite a surprise, to turn into an unlikely-looking gateway off a busy commercial road and find ourselves in this lovely garden surrounded by a historic family home. The family are charming and interesting. Our ground floor room was comfortable and full of character - carved stone pillars around the bed with floaty drapes that I worried would envelop me like a mummy in the middle of the night on the way to the bathroom; and a bit dark, despite the multitude of switches controlling myriad dim lights: it was quite a game working out what controlled what and in our two nights there we never did quite manage it. But we had no problem with traffic noise and slept well, despite the strange way they have of making beds, which I can only compare to the applie-pie beds we tricked each other with in our childhood. It did take a while for the hot water to come through in the bathroom but we'd been warned and it wasn't a problem. Towels a bit grey and worn, but clean. We did find ourselves subtly led by the nose to fit in with the routine of the establishment: it would have seemed churlish not to sit through the pre-dinner puppet show in the courtyard, and to choose to eat anything other than the thali that was offered for dinner. Actually dinner was a bit disappointing: tepid (perhaps because being served from a buffet table in the courtyard) and not very interesting or flavourful. So on our second night we daringly chose to eat out and had a more satisfying experience. But breakfast at Dera Mandawa was good. Wheat porage was a pleasant surprise (though probably wouldn't appeal to non-porage lovers), lots of fresh fruit on offer, and the best poached eggs I've had in any hotel. And the staff were lovely: attentive and efficient.

A truly unique experience A truly unique experience

My wife and I stayed three nights in this tranquil and peaceful boutique heritage hotel. We stayed in a first floor room with all of the usual facilities (except tv) and a really convenient and restful access balcony overlooking the courtyard. We enjoyed the Indian breakfasts and had a couple of delightful and delicious dinners. The owners of the hotel are really hospitable and generous in sharing their time and talking about their family history.

Truly Memorable Hospitality. Truly Memorable Hospitality.

No superlatives written about this former Maharajah's home and its owner Durga Singh can prepare you for the delight that is the experience of staying here. Like others we had been driven through the traffic of the Pink City arriving late in the afternoon. Check in facilities were completed with minimal formality over drinks and a brief introduction to the history of the house, from its owner our host Durga Singh. There was no end to his witticisms, local history and anecdotes, which were always a welcome interlude. We had the suite off the main courtyard which was incredible. I have never slept in a room with its own gallery. We chose to eat each evening at the hotel, and enjoyed the Vegetable Thali, which varied on each occasion. The food was good, always warm and served impeccably. The homemade chapatis were particularly nice. Breakfasts were varied each day, and we ordered different forms of egg to suit. Each evening Mr Singh had arranged a local puppet show, which we watched and enjoyed on our first night - probably once was enough to get the flavour of it. Above all one cant help be impressed by the quality of the establishment, and the care in the hospitality provided by its owner. I loved his explanation as to why there were noises of furniture being moved above our room around 8 every morning - a girls school, but not the students but an overzealous cleaner whom he had tried to remunerate, without success, to temper his enthusiasm. Thank you, Mr Singh, - no more Hiltons or Hyatts for me. Think what I would have missed. A truly delightful conclusion to our 18 days in what we found to be a fascinating country. We will return. By the way - ask him to show you his vintage Austin Ambassador cars, the earliest dating from 1960.

First rate. First rate.

A hugely characterful and comfortable hotel with great staff. A real haven of tranquility. We loved staying here and everyone seemed to be committed to you enjoying your stay. The food was excellent and served either in doors or in the courtyard dependent on weather. No problem in recommending.
