Tranquility and hospitality of traditional Rajasthani charm! Tranquility and hospitality of traditional Rajasthani charm!

by Maria02_2013 on December 13, 2019

We loved our stay at Dear Mandawa. Durga and Usha Singh are warm and very welcoming and from the moment you enter in their 125-year-old- property, you are transported back to a royal era. It is astonishing. Together with the hosts we had a fantastic cookery experience-we were patiently shown by Usha how to cook each traditional dish. A very unique way to get hands-on with Indian food. It was really good that I was able to accommodate my food allergies on our special menu so I could also had a chance of enjoying such a feast! Highly recommended if your travels bring you to Jaipur.

Stunning, historic boutique hotel with warm, gracious hosts Stunning, historic boutique hotel with warm, gracious hosts

Thank you to Dera Mandawa and to Mr. and Mrs. Singh for an incredible stay! The rooms are gorgeous, stylishly appointed with historic Islamic Indian details and fully modern washroom. We loved that the hotel was steps away from the hustle and bustle of Jaipur, near Chandpol Gate, but felt like a secluded magical oasis. The room had an insulated door to cancel out street noise too which was great. For us, this hotel is so special because of its gracious hosts and kind, attentive staff. We participated in a wonderful cooking class where we visited the local market for spices and produce, and then learned some delicious recipes with Mrs. Singh. We sat at a family table enjoying our dishes with other guests and talked with Mr. Singh about culture, food, and living healthy lives. My mom was not feeling well that night, and Mrs. Singh had some ginger tea sent to my mom's room which was so thoughtful. The next morning was Mom's 86th birthday, and Mr. Singh and staff greeted us with a birthday cake and song! My teen son was also treated with such genuine care and respect--Mr. Singh taught him how to wear a turban, and my son was so happy :). Dera Mandawa is truly a gem. We will always remember our visit to the beautiful Pink City of Jaipur with fondness because of Dera Mandawa.

Diwali....!! Diwali....!!

by KeithandMaggie on December 3, 2019

When we were planning our visit to India our advisor suggested allowing time to experience Diwali and arranged our tour so that we stayed at Dera Mandawa for three nights; to say that it was one of the highlights of a holiday of highlights would be a quite inadequate accolade. We echo all that others say about turning from the bustle of the City into the calm respite of the courtyard and doubtless other places have spectacular rooms and efficient and attentive staff but none add the grace of Durga Singh nor make you feel that you are not spectators but members of a family for a few short days. By the time we left we felt we knew the grand children's school friends and want to know how the gymnastics tour goes.We talked long into the night about Indian traditions and the impact of Western influence and who knows, we may well make musical weekends in the sister hotel come to fruition. Some places in India we experience; a few we would wish to return to - Dera Mandawa is at the top of this list. Thank you for the generosity of your hospitality and making our Diwali an experience which we will cherish for many years to come.

Simply the best stay of our whole trip Simply the best stay of our whole trip

From the moment we arrived we felt like guests in the family owners house-such a special experience to spend time with Durga Singh and his wife. We opted to do the cooking class which was excellent; detailed and delicious. And I have never walked into a room before and been lost for words-simply stunning ! But best of all was our host and the conversations over dinner and tea touching on some of the sensitivities that make up a society- we learnt so much and could happily have spent many more hours in his company-thank you for making our time with you so special.

It is beyond me how this dump gets such great reviews. Or a Trip Advisor award of excellence. Yes, it is a beautiful, historic house, and the owner is a lovely gentleman, of the displaced aristocracy, but the place itself is a nightmare! Everything looks worn and the towels are gray. It is right on the street and the endless cacophony of Indian traffic ( constant horns ) is clearly audible. All night. Then they have the nerve to set off firecrackers as entertainment . To add insult to injury there is not hot water. Let me rephrase, there is solar heated hot water with no back up. They tell you to run it 7-10 minutes. I ran it for almost 1/2 hour and it was never more than lukewarm. After finally getting to sleep I was are awakened by god-knows-what metallic banging. I felt as if I was in a maximum security prison. And there is no heat. The room they moved me to, to get me farther away from the traffic ( there is no getting away from it ) had a ridiculous, huge blower that sounded like a hurricane and would blow you off the bed. Instead, I slept in my long underwear. This is the first time I have ever written a review the day after staying somewhere, but I was so horrified I had to warn others. I moved to the Trident. The food is good, thats about it
