Holiday Holiday

We booked this hotel as we wanted to experience the stay in a Haveli as we love the architecture. This is a beautiful property behind the busy street. However we are really disappointed with the our stay. when we arrived there was no-one in reception. After waiting which we didn't mind, the staff came but had a bit of an attitude. We were shown to our room.2flights up(not for the person with leg issues) The room itself was clean with courtyard and we went on the roof Top to capture the beautiful city view. The negatives was only one power point was working. The bed was very squeaky and very uncomfortable. We had dinner and it was like private dining. The food was good kitchen staff was very helpful. We would rate it 3* as we felt we were not welcomed, being Indians. Brigadier and Mrs Singh was polite but swiftly moved away from us didnt really want to engage in an interesting conversation with us. "only the Europeans"

We visited frdrinks at sunset as part of our tour in India . We found the place enchanting . The host was friendly and very interesting and the building was fascinating . We had gin and tonics and homemade nibbles on the the roof terrace . It was a beautiful experience

Great experience Great experience

This hotel is a great experience. The owners are lovely, and dinner was excellent. We enjoyed our stay in the (slightly chaotic!) old city and this lovely historic haveli was a great part of this. Only complaint - the beds are quite hard, and theres no electronic safe (there is a lockable cupboard though). It is definitely a hotel worth a stay for the experience, however.

Excellent! Really, the only place to stay in Jaipur Excellent! Really, the only place to stay in Jaipur

Fortunately we came upon this haveli because of it's location, very reasonable price and good reviews. Not living in the UK, we'd never heard of the BBC TV series 'The Real Marigold Hotel', where it's prominently featured. We couldn't believe our fortune as we checked into the hidden compound of rambling courtyards, set in a local, surprisingly quiet neighbourhood 5 minutes walk from a bustling bazaar street. The home has been the owner's family residence since the middle of the 19th century. We were assigned comfortable, discreet rooms, 317 with a small private terrace, and 318 across the corridor, accessed via a cute, meandering staircase and passageway. We could see from the TV series that many of the rooms were similarly, beautifully, individually decorated. There's also a comfortable roof terrace. The husband and wife owners are gracious and friendly, as are all the staff. Staying here is like staying with good friends. We ordered dinner for the first and last nights. It was served in the elegant cosy dining room and was absolutely delicious. Breakfast, included in our rate, was comprehensive, freshly prepared and the perfect start to the day. After spending the day in the chaos of Jaipur, Kathu Haveli was a really wonderful oasis to return to for a nap or for a good night's sleep. It's difficult to fault on comfort, cuisine, location, friendliness and price. We hope we have an opportunity to return.

Good base for exploring the Pink City Good base for exploring the Pink City

Not unlike other guests we chose the Khatu Haveli as our base in Jaipur having watched the Marigold programme, a reality tv show with minor celebrities. The haveli and our rooms were fine and the view from the roof terrace is breathtaking and the location central and handy for everything. We stayed in two rooms as we had an impromptu stay earlier in our trip for one night and then a 4 night stay a week later. Our first room was located on the ground floor off the courtyard and was very quiet. Small but adequate for our needs. Comfy bed. Our second room was one of the Heritage rooms and was on the top floor with direct access to the roof terrace and lovely views. There was more noticeable noise staying in this room (dogs barking, music playing etc), but as you are in a central location of a busy city we guess this is to be expected. There are steep and deep steps to each level of the haveli and the dining room is on the first floor. One thing to be aware of is that the Haveli hosts regular groups of visitors (mostly Brits), around 6ish until around 7.30 where they come for a G & T, some snacks, a talk by the Brigadier and the view. Dependant on the number these groups can be quite noisy and it prevented us on at least one occasion from enjoying an aperitif on the roof terrace plus the noise from a particularly rowdy bunch was also audible in our room. We had breakfast and dinner at the haveli which was fine although we did find the choices were similar or the same most days but very tasty. Breakfast is served without asking for any preference other than how you would like your eggs cooked. Dinner is buffet style and served at 8pm. We did feel that the courses were cleared quite promptly but understand that the three courses need to be served all at the same time for practical reasons. The meals did represent good value for money. Staff were generally helpful and the hosts the Brigadier and his wife amicable and welcoming. Overall we did enjoy our stay at the haveli but unfortunately we left on a sour note. Please be aware that if you pay by credit card, even if you request the currency to be debited in INR it will be processed as GBP (or your particular currency). This resulted in us paying an additional 16. We discussed this with the owners who we understand are not in any way extracting extra monies in an underhand manner but they do need to realise that the customer should tick and sign the credit card receipt to ensure payment is processed in Rupees and so avoiding additional costs.
