Worst budget lodging we stayed at Worst budget lodging we stayed at

by SushmitaJHA on January 5, 2016

While Ganga Guest House is located in a nice old house, it turned out to be the worst budget place we stayed at in our 18 day trip to south India, though at Rs.1000/night in south India, we stayed at terrific places elsewhere. Here is why: We made a 50% advance payment by bank transfer at least a month in advance and getting even an acknowledgement from Ganga was a one-week long, 'many phone calls and text messages' nightmare. When we arrived late evening totally exhausted, no one was available to check us in and show us to our room, even though we called Ganesan at least one hour before to alert him of our check-in time. When we called him again he said 'Five minutes' and took twenty minutes to arrive. Our hearts sank at the look and feel of the place. The room had terrible, cheap and torn linen, no towels or soap (we were given only one after demanding), no cupboard to keep our clothes. Plug points were not working, except one high up on the wall with no table below to keep our mobiles, etc. which needed charging. There was one large table but the table top wobbled so much that it was unsafe to keep anything on it. We had to ask for drinking water for the night, which is a basic thing we got in every other hotel we stayed at, and it was given in a bottle but without any glasses. The bathroom, while it had a water heater, had no clothes peg or towel rack. The WC had not seen cleaning in years, perhaps. The washbasin was miniscule. So there was absolutely no place in the bathroom to either keep our toiletteries, or hang our (own) towel or clothes. Whats more, the moment Ganesan arrived to check us in, instead of catering to our basic needs and apologising for keeping us waiting, he asked for the balance 50% payment! We paid it while checking out. We will not recommend this suffering to any traveller.

by Francois P on August 6, 2015
