Originally, the town was centered around the crossroad which is located between the Sangolda- Soccoro road and Mapusa- Panaji highway. Alto de Porvorim is situated on the north bank (right bank) of the Mandovi River. It is a well connected town and has necessary infrastructure like hotels, hospitals and schools. Although it is a well developed town, it still retains a lot of greenery and is more of a residential area that houses a number of educational institutions. In addition to this, the town also has a number of governmental institutes, which makes it the legislative capital of Goa. Porvorim also offers a number of wonderful hotels that can cater to all kinds of tourists. There are also a number of restaurants around the town which offer different kinds of cuisines that cater to the tastes of locals and tourists. Located about 4 km from Panjim, the state capital of Goa, Alto de Provorim can be found on the NH17 Mumbai-Goa highway. It is an upmarket residential hub and is officially a village.
