Cavelossim was the original abode of the goddess Shri Shantadurga, which was one of the biggest temples in the state. However, during the Portuguese inquisition, the idol was moved from Cavelossim to Kawlem. To the south of this town is the Sal River which flows into the Arabian Sea. At the southernmost tip, Cavelossim has a well known beach that runs along from the south to Majorda, in the north. Apart from the neighbouring beaches, Cavelossim has very attractions, which is why it does not see many tourists. However, the town does have a few hotels around that cater to tourists. These offer basic comforts and at reasonable rates. In addition to this, Cavelossim also has a small number of restaurants that specialize in the local food, making it an ideal place for visitors to have an authentic Goan meal. The town has a rather small population of approximately 12,000 people and is a quaint place which has more local residents than travellers.
