THE place to stay in Agra THE place to stay in Agra

by WhirldTraveler on February 24, 2017

I stayed in 5 different Oberoi properties in India during February 2017. The trip was arranged directly through Oberoi, including transfers, sightseeing, guides, etc. If you are interested in the Oberoi properties, then I would encourage you to book directly with them. I had a very good experience working with Tenzin Nyima to arrange my trip, and I would do it again in the future when I plan a visit to the Indian Himalayas. I will review each property, and this is my review of the Oberoi Amarvilas. If you can afford it, this is THE place to stay in Agra. We stayed here for two nights, which is just about right if you're only here to see Agra. First, its location is very close to the Taj Mahal. That affords it a lovely view of the Taj from its rooms. The Vilas from Oberoi have decor reminiscent of the British colonial period, which I just love. Everything is tastefully decorated. We were upgraded to balcony rooms (thank you!). The rooms are slightly smaller than some of the other rooms we stayed at. However, the pool area is just, wow! I took so many pictures of that pool area with its cascading fountains, terraced patios and colorful umbrellas. This pool area rivals, if not surpasses, the pools at the Oberoi Udaivilas in Udaipur. The pool was heated, but I didn't get in because it was just a bit chillier than I would like. However, I laid out by the pool and they immediately bring you water and sunscreen. The grounds are large. I took a short walk toward the back lawn and saw some peahens. The food was just fine. We ate at the fancier Indian restaurant and I did not feel that it was any better than the regular restaurant. When visiting the Taj, we were provided with a golf cart transfer. So convenient. Of course, service here was on par with the other Oberoi properties. Just top notch. When we visited the Vilas property, we were always greeted by the General Manager. That is very nice touch, and it makes the guests feel important. It was no different at the Amarvilas. The only nit that I can pick on is that the rooms had a bit of a mildew smell. It didn't smell as nice as the Oberoi Gurgaon. I hardly noticed it after a while.

Beautiful Hotel with Spectacular Views of the Taj Mahal Beautiful Hotel with Spectacular Views of the Taj Mahal

by SusaDogue on February 23, 2017

We only had one night in Agra but wanted a hotel with a view of the Taj Mahal. The Oberoi Amarvilas - although incredibly expensive - provides spectacular views. The rooms are beautiful and the service is impeccable. It is also incredibly convenient for sunrise viewings of the Taj Mahal, just down the road and the hotel provides complimentary electric carts to and from the entrance. We had lunch and dinner in the hotel and breakfast the following morning. All meals were outstanding. Overall, a great stay at a beautiful hotel, in a perfect location, with fantastic service - but at a price!

A Room with a Proper View! A Room with a Proper View!

by CJeremyL on February 23, 2017

This magnificent palace-type hotel is renowned for its bedroom views of the Taj Mahal and, on the basis that a couple of nights might be just affordable, be aware of the extras: a packet of biscuits from the room bar marked clearly as IR 60 was billed as IR 2000 but admittedly the reception dropped the item when it was pointed out. Dinner for 2 in the dining room soup, pasta and a glass of Indian wine came to 111 whereas eating out locally would come to around 40! I gained the impression that such details might not be of concern to those who could afford to come here but it was an interesting take on life in such august establishments. There were friendly staff everywhere and they and the breakfast spread quite made up for the irritations aired above. A complementary golf buggy service is provided to convey guests to the entrance of the Taj some 500m distant. A room with a balcony is a must.

Dissapointing Experience Dissapointing Experience

by mrdowdeswell on February 23, 2017

Whilst in Agra on 9th Feb, for our last night special treat we put our best clothes on and went to the Oberoi for a drink and dinner. Its a beautiful hotel and i can see why it gets such good reviews, however at reception we explained that we hadn't made a reservation and would like to have dinner in the Bellevue restaurant, we were told to go through to the bar and a table would be arranged,so far so good ,after being ignored in the bar,(we were only served after some regular guests had been seated and served first ) we had our drinks and waited, and waited, after a long time had passed i went back out to reception to check on our table, i was passed from one staff member to another and then to someone else who new nothing of our request but took us to our table in the end. Two of us chose the chicken curry,it was the signature dish it was very bland and ordinary , i have cooked better curries at home to be perfectly honest. To make things worse, the waiters insist on serving you the food from dishes at the table and our waiter spilled the hot chicken curry all over the floor, the tablecloth, over my friends camera bag and ruined my shirt sleeve. There was barely an apology, they stood back trying to decide whose fault it was, we sat at the dirty table trying not to tread in curry for the rest of the meal, i had to ask more than once to be wiped down and my expensive shirt was wrecked, they eventually cleaned the camera bag the best they could but by then our evening was ruined, anyone can make a mistake, its just that it was not dealt with in any way satisfactorily, i can see why you would love this hotel but for us the dinner experience let them down badly, for this reason i would not recommend.

Must go Must go

by Kavitha M on February 23, 2017

We were hesitant to take a day on our trip from Delhi to Jaipur to see TajMahal, but the lady that helped book all of our Oberoi stay and travel recommended it and it was absolutely worth it. We had great views of the Taj Mahal and it was beautiful experience to watch it as the sun rises. Rooms were clean and well appointed. Definitely worth spending the money. We were there in Dec 2015. Thank you
