This was the last stop during our Kerala trip, and it was the perfect place to relax and enjoy the lake and backwater surroundings. Nirmala and Babu were very sweet and helpful. The food was consistently tasty and grounds and room are beautifully appointed.
We arrived in the middle of the night and were welcomed by Nirmala with sweet tea which was much needed! When we woke up the following morning and opened our curtains our breath was taken away by the stunning view over the water. The room was lovely, very very comfortable with AC and slightly hit and miss wi-fi but it was all the little details and finishing that really made the room beautiful. The food was really delicious and we particularly enjoyed our first lunch off a banana leaf! We didn't do much other than relax at Taamara but that was perfect for us - watching the world go by on the water with the fishing boats in the morning, all the birds and wildlife and then the invasion of houseboats in towards nightfall. The neighbour did take us out on his canoe for a small tip which was very fun and gave us a different view of the lake and we also took a short walk up to the local temple but mainly we just relaxed and enjoyed the serenity of Taamara. Nirmala and her husband were great hosts, very welcoming and helpful - Nothing was too much trouble and they were lovely company! I have to mention Mr Lenin. We originally hired Mr Lenin to drive us from the train station to Taamara on the night (very early morning) that we arrived. He was there to greet us on the platform which was a great relief, he struck us as very reliable, a safe driver who knows the area and with a comfortable car. He helped us arrange a houseboat trip which was fantastic and he drove us back to Cochin airport - I recommend you ask Nirmala to put you in touch with him should you require a car or a houseboat ... he even took us shopping in Alleppy!
Taamara is a good 40min drive from Alleppy, in the right direction towards Cochin airport, so it makes a great last stop of your holiday. It's a wonderfully tranquil spot where you can sit on the porch and watch the fisherman tend to their Chinese nets. There's not a great deal to do around here but we enjoyed a circular walk to the high street and just enjoying the garden and lake. A must-do is a day excursion to Alleppy to explore the backwaters in a small boat and stroll along the beach etc. The rooms are attractively furnished and very clean. The hostess, Nearmal, is lovely and keen to chat. She makes you feel incredibly welcome. I enjoyed chatting with her and her enigmatic husband (VV Babu - a retired film maker). My wife was made-up in a flower garland and Sari which was great fun - a VERY special birthday treat. The home-food provided is some of the best we had in Kerala (red snapper, prawn biryani) and they have beer in the fridge! There's a lovely young family helping out and looking after the place - they waved us off at 5am! All in all, this was a warm and memorable visit with a personal touch second to none.
Taamara is a beautiful, relaxing homestay with stunning views of Lake Vembanad, in the Alleppey district of Kerala. The views from the room's decked terraces over the lake/backwaters is simply stunning - sit and watch the fishermen work their chinese fishing nets at sunset and sunrise. The grounds are beautiful, the food absolutely delicious, and the hosts, Nirmala and Babu (a well known Keralan film producer) could not be more lovely. They will organise anything you want them to organise, and will eat with you if you so wish, sharing stories about Keralan life and culture, and Hindu mythology. A fascinating and relaxing stay. Would highly recommend.
We stayed at Taamara on Christmas Eve & Christmas Day a Haven of Tranqulity that you absorbed as soon as you set foot in the beautifully kept tropical gardens. Host Nirmala & her husband made us feel so welcome, they showed us to our comfortable room with veranda overlooking the lake and backwaters .They so thoughtfully put up and decorated a Christmas tree and filled pots with floating petals on the veranda which was directly outside our room. It was heaven just to relax after a hectic few days travelling .watching the sun rise and sunsets and the houseboats lazingly drift by was quite magical and calming . On Christmas morning Nirmala arranged for my husband to go fishing and I watched her cook an amazing Lobster Curry for Christmas Lunch . The food here is exceptional such a variety of authentic homemade Kerala curries , side dishes and breads just amazing !! (We came away with a few recipes ) Christmas evening we were taken on a boat trip to watch the sunset ..perfect end to a perfect couple of days at Taamara. I would also like to mention the staff there are just a few who were very friendly & attentive all adding to this lovely christmas experiance We would definatly recomend a stay here .
