Scenic surrounding but... Scenic surrounding but...

by Kiran_Palkar on May 12, 2016

Scenic surrounding with green mountains, serpentine river, peacocks playing background music all add to make your visit worthy. BUT, the rest house is poorly maintained, electricity is available for a limited period, the loose wires dangling dengerously, rooms are very small and not arranged properly, etc.May be it matches the rent they charge.

Neglected property & ill-maintained inside the forest Neglected property & ill-maintained inside the forest

by V1VEK on April 10, 2016

After we stayed at the Shahnur Eco Tourism complex of the same forest department, I can only say that this property is completely ignored. It doesn't even have the basic facilities set up right with unclean rooms, intermittent electricity and old constructions. They should probably erect some tents like in Shahnur or you should choose to stay at Shahnur instead of Kolkas. Both the properties are 80 kms away with hilly roads in between.

Criminal wate of an outstanding facility! Truly unfortunate Criminal wate of an outstanding facility! Truly unfortunate

by Shivanand P on February 3, 2016

Please don't ever take any of the Forest Department or Government of Maharashtra facilities! This place was fist built for late Shrimati Indira Gandhi, PM of India. The location is fantastic but in it's present format one can't stay there unless you want rats jumping on you in your bed!...leaking faucets, darkness as there is no regular supply of electricity or solar powered lights. Fortunately the Manager is very considerate and is able to help out to the limited extent he can. There is an apology of a canteen but reasonable staff. If this facility is handed over to regular hospitality service...all will be truly happy. Their website is totally deceptive and the photographs are of the inception time. The persons answering the calls are apologetic about the fact that they can't give you the fullest of information / directions as they have themselves never been on the field!

Middle of Forest with Limited/Basic Amenities! Middle of Forest with Limited/Basic Amenities!

by gitanjali m on May 31, 2015

If you want to experience the life with the very basic amenities available and want to show your kid values of basic life and forest life - don't go anywhere else - just stay at Kolkas rest House in melghat Tiger reserve. You can sit on watch tower for hours and soak in the River and surrounding bird life, you can even do a nature walk where Maharashtra forest department has put the names on trees and probable list of birds you can see. Just enjoy where you will feel that time has stopped! A must and definite visit! we will visit again and also value for money.

Stay to Understand Impact of Jungles on Our Life! Stay to Understand Impact of Jungles on Our Life!

by VivekPilania on April 30, 2015

Me and my wife are wildlife enthusiast and love to travel to Jungles and prefer to stay in forest rest house. With the same in mind we zeroed down on Melghat Tiger reserve and travelled in first week of April by Road. I have stayed in Semadoh for 1 night and in Kolkas for 2 nights. Kolkas`rest house is located around 1 km inside the forest area along the river. It is divided in two parts Kolkas and Upper Kolkas. We have booked a room for 2 nights in Kolkas. You can do online booking of forest rest house in Maharashtra. Link for online booking is https://accommodation.mahaonline.gov.in/Home/Index.aspx Kolkas have 5 cottages priced at Rs. 700, 2 dormitory 20 beds priced at Rs. 210 one suite in upper kolkas priced at Rs. 1600. All the prices mentioned are excluding food and other charges. Upper Kolkas location is better as it is constructed on the cliff and you can see the river from Top. Also the rooms in upper kolkas are big and have better view. Lower Kolkas/Kolkas rooms are slightly smaller not possible to put an extra bed if you wish so and can accommodate only 2 people. Forest department has provided Air coolers (symphony) in the room though only issue is the availability of electricity (provision of solar light is there). Canteen facility is there in Kolkas rest house. Food is simple and good, though be prepared for delay in preparation of food. The properties are owned by Forest Department of Maharashtra and well maintained. Vodafone/Airtel mobile network doesnt work here and also nearest ATM is in Semadoh ~approximately 16 kms. You definitely need a vehicle here. You can also sit on a machaan near upper kolkas and do bird watching or go for well-marked Nature trail where you can see different birds and if lucky, you may be able to see the flying squirrel. Highly recommended place to stay and understand the Impact of trees/Jungles/ecological balance on our life and also to teach the Impact of same to next generation. Make sure to carry your bottles of water/ other essentials (Tooth brush/paste/soap/towels etc.) and also a Swiss Knife/Torch. Remember you are staying in Forest Rest House and not in a Hotel though you are paying for it.
