Calm and laid back place Calm and laid back place

by Roni S on November 1, 2016

We stayed here for 2 nights during the long weekend of Diwali and Nov 1, we were looking for a place near to Bangalore so that we could save ourselves from the noise and pollution during Diwali. The resort is surrounded by forest and we could see and hear birds singing through out the day. Rooms are spacious, with a mezzanine floor which can accommodate 2 grownups along with the 2 Beds which are there in the main room. Bathroom was also clean and neat and each of the rooms had its own geyser. There was tribal cultural program during the evening followed by bonfire. During the cultural program, members of the local Solige tribe danced to their traditional songs and was an engaging experience. Food was nice, options were limited, but nothing to complain about. One feedback was to have a contact no. with 24 hours availability for any issues that may arise within rooms (since there is no intercom). Overall we had a very enjoyable experience. Thank you.

Had amazing experience staying there one night.Food quality and taste needs to improve. The cultural event was good. The bird watching activity was good, should improve with the safari. The spa experience is nice. Price is quite high at present. The rooms are great. Night was a bit scary since its inside jungle.

Resort run by a NGO Resort run by a NGO

Gorukana experience was very good, we spent one night at the resort. The resort is nestled among very tall trees and all the cottages are facing a valley. The rooms have mezzanine floor with the bedding which is unique and gives a different feel. The bed and rooms are clean and spacious. Food is good, do not expect a large spread in jungle. They had 1 hour of folk dance which was good and entertaining. Staff was polite and helpful, everybody from front desk, staff at the restaurant are will to make your stay better. We were taken on a walk at around 7.30 AM in the morning around the resort and the naturalist was very knowledgeable about the flora and fauna. We could spot many birds which are not a common sight for urban dwellers. Did not try the spa in the resort. The resort is run by an NGO which is working with the tribal community helping them integrate with the main stream. They are providing them education, healthcare etc, we were given a tour of school and small scale industries set up by the NGO. Drove from Bangalore, it is an easy drive of 3-3.5 hours via kanakpura road. You will not find many places to stop for food so need to plan your travel accordingly. The last leg of the drive is soothing as you drive through a forest area. There are a few reviews mentioning about a bad stretch of road leading to resort, it is definitely not in good shape but very manageable even for low clearance cars. If you are a person who would prefer the place to be spotlessly clean with all 5 star amenities then Gorukana does not fit the bill. If you want to be close to nature then I will definitely recommend the place. You will come across spiders, insects, spiders may be a snake (if you are lucky as we did), it is a very common sight to witness cattle grazing in the campus. The resort is priced steeply for the amenities as the profits are ploughed back into the upliftment of the tribal community you may not feel the pinch.

The booking process was a bit tedious since their website was out of order when I was trying to book. Somehow managed to booked a tree house for a day. When we went there, we were told that there was impending plumbing work which was being undertaken at the tree house, due to which, we were requested to stay at their cottage. It was a good thing that we did, since it rained for the most part of our stay. The activities mentioned in their itinerary couldn't be followed since rain cancelled our plans. Although they mentioned that the lights would go off at 10:30 PM, they still kept the lights on in the property for us, to make us feel secure, since we were the only guests that night. Pros: 1. Good property : not too far from either civilization or the forest 2. Great staff : Each and every person in this place is warm and friendly 3. Great food Cons: 1. Booking process could have been less tedious 2. They could do better with in the cleanliness area, although, it is a bit difficult to maintain the property cleaner at a location like that.

A resort run by the locals. A resort run by the locals.

Gorukana 's location is right below the Biligiriranganatha Swamy temple amidst real forest land. It is in fact a short uphill walk to the temple. Wild Boars, deer and the occasional elephant (or herd) wade through in close vicinity and sometimes right next to your cottages! This place is run entirely by locals or Soligas who are excellent hosts. They put up an extravagant cultural program every evening and guests are welcome to join in the celebrations. Food is simple but delicious and the rooms are comfortable with wide views. There is a small zipline within the resort which is good fun. Note that the K Gudi tiger reserve entrance is located about 40 mins away from this place if you intend to go on the wildlife safari.

Demo Trip Avoid the tree house unless you are a couple and need extreme privacy. It is not worth the additional price.

Demo Trip Tent house or Tree House

Demo Trip Try booking the Tree house instead of the cottages, although those aren't bad either.
