After a particularly bad experience with another hotel for our first few days in Bangalore (Lusia Inn...never even consider this place), Vellara Hotel felt like a 5 star palace! The rooms were big and clean with good air conditioning. Wifi was a little slow (averaged about 1.5mbps down and around 0.7mbps up) but it was reliable with no dropouts and it seems slow connections are the norm across India. Staff were extremely friendly and helpful - they even used their personal accounts to call an Uber for us sometimes as we didn't have data on our phones.
Location is fantastic with many great restaurants nearby. We don't shop much but if you're into that, we saw many western brand name shops around.
We liked this place so much that we stayed again a second time for a 1 night transit in Bangalore.
The hotel is located on the main road but the it is not very prominent, so you will have to look out for the sign board. I visited this hotel when it was under renovation and was weary of what it could offer. However, my fears were laid to rest when I entered and saw the quality of rooms. The reception area is also small but it does have a lounge area with seating for visitors. The hotel has a lift that takes you up to the rooms and the rooftop restaurant. The rooms are quite large and with custom built beds, 2 single sofas, dressing table, cupboard, television, fan and air condition. The bathrooms were very clean and had running hot water. The variety of the complimentary breakfast provided was a limited but good. You can also order for room service. If you are looking for a budget hotel with good amenities, this is the one for you.
Small Kerala-style hotel right on Brigade Road. Not known by name to many cab drivers, yet you can reach the hotel without much difficulty just because it is on Brigade Road. Tell the driver the address, he will take you close to the hotel. Look around and you will see the hotel signboard. The entrance is a bit awkward, and the reception is not a big grandeur one - but you shoudn't judge the rooms by your first impression. In fact, rooms are quite spacious!
The hotel is 30 min walk from M G Road. It's location is really good. Just walk along the Brigade road towards North (come out of the hotel, turn right, walk straight; at the junction with Museum Road, take right i.e., continue on Brigade Road; walk straight, take no other turn till you hit M G Road). M G Road in Bengaluru is the most happening street - flush with party animals during weekends. Shopping heaven, dining paradise, bla bla bla....You must visit it in the evening at least once !!
The airport is about 40 km from the hotel. Given the nasty Bengaluru traffic, it might take even 2 hrs to reach the hotel during peak hours. So be careful while catching your departure flight. That way the hotel is closer to Yeshwanthpura railway station (15 km away i.e., 45 min travel time). Metro station is on M G Road. You have to either walk for half an hour or take a cab to reach the hotel from the metro station.
Rooms are big and clean, linens are okayish, toilets are spacious too; we didn't have bath tub in our toilet - so not sure about it. Rooms are undergoing renovation, so do inspect the room before you check in. Toiletries are minimal - better to carry your own set. Hot water is available.
Being beside a busy road, the hotel is noisy even at night; if you have sleeping problem in noisy ambience, be cautious.
Morning breakfast is complimentary in CP plan. It has two types of fruits (if you are late in reaching the top floor makeshift dining hall, you may not get fruits), bread, butter/jam, omelette (you have to tell the attendants to prepare for you, it is not readily available on the table), south Indian items like idly, dosa (again you have to order), upma/uttapam, and cornflakes with milk. Overall, though not fancy, it is sufficient to fill you up for the day.
There are few restaurants around, but we found them quite costly for budget travelers. For lunch and dinner, we preferred to have them on any of the myriads of restaurants on M G Road, and then take Ola/Uber to come back to the hotel. If you come out of the hotel and walk right a few steps, you will find a nice ice cream parlour where you can relish your deserts.
The hotel has no full-fledged restaurant of its own. However, if you need basic food, you can go to the top floor kitchen and tell them to prepare. Chicken curry and rice is readily availability upon order. They take some time to prepare; so you may order from your room and then go there after half an hour. The good part is that they have a tie-up with a nearby restaurant, wherefrom they provide room service for a variety of foods - the menu card kept inside the room is for that purpose only.
WiFi is average; you may use multiple devices too. Rooms have both air-conditioner and fan.
They have no travel desk; but the front-desk manager can arrange car for you if you tell him previous night. Cubbon park, Ulsoor lake, Vidhana Soudha (yes, it is worth visiting in Bengaluru) and Lalbagh are nearby. Bangalore palace is also not far. Being centrally located, the hotel is good to put up for sight-seeing too.
Next to the hotel is the All Saints Stores and Bakery, which is actually a departmental store specializing in bakery items. Mineral water, biscuits, pastries, samosas, beverages, soaps, toothpaste, tooth brush, shampoo etc are available. If you have forgot to bring something with you, you may get it here.
The manager Mr. Santosh at the reception is a very nice, amicable guy, who is always ready to help you. The staff and attendants are also very helpful.
This hotel was a perfect choice for my 3 nights in Bangalore. The hotel was recently completely refurbished, The large bright rooms are very clean and quiet.. Both fan and a/c quiet and work well ( a/c was not really needed for sleep in Feb), Sizeable bathroom with lots of hot water. Comfortable room with wardrobe, counter space and a seating area. Very comfy bed. Excellent breakfast (Indian/western fusion), daily complimentary newspaper, extremely friendly and helpful staff.
Rooms are reasonably priced for the budget conscious visitor. You get a lot of quality for what you pay.
Located on Brigade road about 900 m south of MG road the area is perfect. There are many, many restaurants (both Indian and western) within walking distance, lots of shopping too. Metro stop is right at MG road. Very central for sightseeing. I suggest you do your homework first and know what restaurants you would like and their location, as quality varies and locations can be a bit obscure though close by.
