Chanderi is a "must see" for serious travelers to India. It's monuments, many dating from the 15th Century, are splendid. The problem with Chanderi is the lack of tourist infrastructure- there are only two very basic hotels. The Tana Bana MP Tourist Bungalow is a prime example of poor tourist infrastructure. For us it was an unpleasant experience. Review follows: Scale: 1 (awful) to 10 (outstanding) Exterior Appearance: 4 Better than some other options in Chanderi, but there is trash on the rear exterior. Interior Public Space Appearance: 3. Parts are basic but acceptable and other parts are a bit grim. Very basic. Interior hall near our room was used to hold what looks like debris or used items in the open. Interior Public Space Cleanliness: 3 Reception/Cashier Attitude: 2. Manager is dour and seemed unable to smile. Night staff is very friendly and helpful. Reception/Cashier Efficiency: 3 Overall Staff Attitude/Professionalism: 4. Some of the staff are very friendly and helpful. Others, including the manager, are less so. The manager seems not to care about the hotel or its guests. Concierge Quality (if applicable): No concierge Room Decor: Small, basic room. Has been sloppily painted since some earlier reviews. Not a space in which one would want to spend time. Bathroom Fixtures: 3. Broken hot water was fixed on request by Gerry rigging electrical wiring strung across bathroom. Shower fixture malfunctioned and hotel manager shrugged when I complained about his failure to have it repaired. It never was repaired. Other fixtures are basic but relatively modern and clean. No surface area for placing toiletry items. Room Cleanliness: 3/4. Mosquitoes in the room, but no other insects. We asked for mosquito coils which were supplied. Room furniture a bit tattered and basic but relatively clean for a tourist bungalow, though there are dust balls by the baseboards and dust on baseboards. Floor tiles are relatively clean, as are the linen and towels. However, step rug at bathroom entrance was filthy. Daily Room Servicing: 3. Quality of Bathroom Supplies (shampoo, etc.): 3 Only one wafer sized piece of soap and small tube of basic shampoo and body lotion. Hairdryer in Room: No. Safe in Room: No. Entertainment Equipment in Room: 4. Simple TV. Wifi: Yes, and works much better than in the MP bungalow in Sanchi, where it didn't work at all. Spa: No Gym: No Pool: No Restaurant Appearance: 4 seems recently painted, but very basic. Restaurant Food Quality: 3/4. Very basic and not good. Very limited choices. Cannot compete with restaurant in the MP guest bungalow in Sanchi, which is excellent. Restaurant Service: 5. Attentive and friendly. Special Attractions: None Accessibility: 3. Very inaccessible for handicapped travelers. No elevator to the better rooms and no way to get to the lower quality ground floor rooms without negotiating two relatively high steps, and those rooms are very small and difficult for anyone in a wheelchair. Other Comments: The basic ground floor rooms are relatively inexpensive, and you get what you pay for. Noise every night from neighborhood music playing loudly. A place I was happy to leave.

This is a good place to stay as it s close to the chanderi town and decently clean. There are just few options available in that location. This is govt. run and gives good pricing. You can try and book in advance as the availability is limited and options only this hotel. The manager is friendly and helpful.

I think its only place in chanderi where you can get best service & good food. Its MP tourism authorized hotel & restaurant. We have visited only restaurant. Staff is pleased & co-operative. Nice & hygienic ambience. Must visit places in chanderi.

You don't have much choice of you want to visit Chanderi. This is the MP tourist hotel. Not well cared for or well managed - but just about OK. The restaurant is better then the rooms. The town is enchanting, full of wonderful things to see and visited by only a few tourists.

We stayed here several years ago and hated it, but it was the only place to stay whilst visiting Chanderi. When we decided to return to Chanderi, we dreaded returning to the Tana Bana, but again it was the only option. Our second visit was much better. We chose a better quality room (AC Deluxe even though we didnt need AC in the winter) and we paid somewhat more for it, but it was worth it. More space, somewhat cleaner linens, no rats or bugs that we were aware of this time (the hotel seemed to have been updated in the intervening years - the halls and rooms looked brighter with a new coat of paint; however, little care was taken in the wall painting - pictures on the wall got splashed, the plants in pots under the walls were dotted with paint as well but no matter they are near dead anyway) The food well we didn't starve but we mostly ate toast, soup and a few basic dishes. You are more or less captive here, even with a car and driver there seemed to be nowhere else to eat except the hotel. The staff had little English but there was one man who really seemed to care. The day we checked out he was not there. We wanted to leave a tip for him but didn't know how to make sure it got to him. We left it in an envelope with the desk clerk and at the suggestion of our driver we asked the clerk to call the man we wanted to tip so we could speak to him - in the hearing of the rest of the staff we told him we were leaving an envelope with money in it for him - that way, as the driver so cleverly knew he would be sure to get the tip money intended for him. Chanderi is a wonderful town with much to see. It is ripe for a great hotel to be built here. Too bad the Tana Bana can not fit that bill by really fixing itself up. It has potential, but not much more.

Demo Trip As far as I can tell all the rooms were awful. We had non AC as it was not particularly hot. The fan worked.

Demo Trip We stayed on the ground floor. Hotel is outside the town, so all rooms are fairly quiet, unless you have one close to reception.
