Just wanted to take a short relaxing break with family and staying in Chennai, resorts in ECR were the obvious choices. Checked the availability, most of them were sold out due to Christmas/holidays. However, managed to get a room in this property. Booked through Travelguru portal, redirected from Tripadvisor. The booking procedure was easy and simple.
Check-in was at 14:00hrs, we arrived at around 15:30hrs and we were welcomed with cold towels and welcome drink. The check-in formalities were over in about 5 minutes and were directed to the room. The room was good and nicely done. Good wooden furnishing and had a view of the swimming pool from a distance. The ï¿½Sea-viewï¿½ room was just as what the description says :) a view of the sea from the room, far away though. The mini-bar was well-stocked with some beer, spirits and snacks. Somehow these old buildings, renovated with furnishing from ï¿½thoseï¿½ times doesnï¿½t impress me much. I would rather prefer brand new fittings, furniture, etc. Thatï¿½s my preference, of course.
We stepped out to take a look of the property, and the swimming pool was very good and was obviously busy at around 16:30 hrs. We had a look at the beach and the bay view restaurant beside it. A nice private beach, lifeguards and security were alert. We took a ride on the battery-operated vehicle and went around the resort and it was enjoyable. They have about four or five of them to escort guests between their rooms and the main building. Some rooms can be far away and might take about 5-10 minutes by walk.
Swimming pool was in general well-maintained, however, some light fittings here and there were loose. There is a bar counter beside the swimming pool. I didnï¿½t order from there, but I presume they serve pretty much everything as in the bar.
Kids playroom was closed around 19:30 and it would have been good if it was open for longer.
We had dinner and breakfast the next day at Seagull. The attention to detail in service could have been better in the restaurant.
Next morning, myself and my son took a bicycle ride around the property and that was fairly good. There were some activities like fish-feeding, tattoo-painting, balloon-sculpting and that was good and kept the kids busy. We checked out around 12:30hrs and the check-out was normal.
Overall, it was definitely a very enjoyable stay in this place, but it wasnï¿½t out of the world as I would expect from a name like Taj.
Of course I would visit again and recommend it to friends.
we ate twice in this restaurant, a dinner and a breakfast the following morning. Overall, the taste of each and every dish was wonderful, no complaints whatsoever. However, there are a few very minor incidents that were not-very-pleasant and probably could have been avoided.
I wouldnï¿½t expect a used/stained table napkin in a 5* property, for that matter, anywhere. The table mat and the glass mat had a stain too. Obviously the table hadnï¿½t been cleaned properly. When we pointed it out, the waiter apologised and replaced it with another one. Okay, we could ignore it as oversight, but in places like these, they should be doubly careful isnï¿½t it?
The next morning, we came in very late for breakfast, around 10:40AM, after completing all childrenï¿½s activities like fish-feeding, tattoo-painting and so on. I was told the buffet is going to close in ten minutes. Normally it is until 10:30AM, and being Christmas, it was open for a little longer. Since the buffet was anyway not included in my room-rate, I wasnï¿½t too keen, instead, I was thinking of going ï¿½ la carte. It took me a while to get this information, get a table and settle down for ï¿½ la carte, until the manager or someone in-charge came and explained this to us. The waiters looked completely lost, probably unsure of what or how to say the buffet was closing. We were not seated yet, but a couple of waiters asked us if we wanted Masala Dosa :) and that the buffet was closing !!! I understood they were only trying to help to ensure we didnï¿½t miss anything :)
We ordered a few items and wanted just one of them changed to another (while the waiter was still at our table taking orders) and he confirmed it, but we got the wrong item. Again, he was apologetic and requested us to have it, while he would bring the correct item soon. It was nice that he did not charge us for it, but I would expect him to be a little more careful with the orders. Again, probably one off-incident.
Now the food :)
For dinner, we ordered fish filets in the kidï¿½s menu, Nasi Goreng and Pan fried Paneer. All the three dishes were tasty and with a nice flavor. We ordered a butterscotch tart with caramel sauce and icecream, that was wonderful too.
During breakfast, Eggs to order was the best dish in terms of portion size and taste. It had chicken sausages, potato wedges, Egg Omlette/Scrambled Egg with 2 toasted bread slices. Chicken keema dosa was very tasty with a generous amount of keema inside. The coconut chutney was absolutely fresh and yummy. Waffles was just ok, not so great. Aloo Paratha and Gobi paratha were good, but for the same price as the other dishes mentioned earlier, it was less in quantity, could have been at least two parathas in a plate, it was just one and it disappeared in a jiffy :). Fresh fruits was good, but again too little.
The food, as I had mentioned earlier, was very tasty!
