Heritage hotel with excellent ambience and amenities Heritage hotel with excellent ambience and amenities

by madhusreedutta on February 16, 2017

Hotel Fort House in Fort Kochi is closest to an ideal facility. It is a beautiful heritage property that is neither loud nor annoyingly exotic. The best feature of the property is that it is cool, casual and yet classy. Efficient services are there but nobody breathes down your neck nor do they ever try to sell an extra feature or two. The admin staff at the desk are alert and dignified. No over-selling of anything here. Spacious rooms with beautiful wooden and cane furnitures and sublime lighting. Specially the bathroom is unusually spacious - in the style of South Indian family homes. The toiletries were very basic but of good quality organic stuff. The in-house restaurant next to the sea is exquisite. Though the service is slow the food has good home cuisine taste. The restaurant service staff needs more training in order to serve international guests. The hotel has nice compound with old trees to walk around. That makes the hotel looks more like an institution than a service hotel. I stayed in the hotel with some friends to attend the Kochi Art Biennial. The location is between the market area in Mattncheryy and Fort Kochi jetty. It is in walking distance to all important sites - synagogue, basilica, palaces, spice market, jew town and sea beach. I have been to this picturesque coastal town many times earlier. But this trip remained memorable because of Hotel Fort House.

Great Hotel in Kocki Great Hotel in Kocki

This hotel would have received 5 stars had it been the only hotel we stayed at in India. However for the price I feel the rooms are a little basic. The service was very good throughout our time here and foodwise it was the best we found in Kochi despite eating at some other well regarded restaurants. The breakfast was very good and on the evening we stayed there for dinner it was excellent. The location of this hotel was excellent and I would highly recommend for those staying in Kochi.

Sleeping in history Sleeping in history

This hotel was originally a fort during days if the raj. The rooms are basic in their furnishings and the bed was so hard I was convinced I would never sleep. In fact I had best sleep three nights of our stay. The toiletries were aryuvedic my skin and hair felt really good. We ate breakfast on the decking over looking the estuary watching boats of every size go up and down, such a shame new port built opposite a real "blot on the landscape". Food choice was excellent service at times a little slow the delightful staff made up for it. Lots of restaurants bars coffee Shops all within walking distance. Good value for money

Great for dinner. Lovely view. Great food. Nice staff Great for dinner. Lovely view. Great food. Nice staff

Very nice place for dinner. Lovely ambience. Great staff. No alcohol. Food was great. Amazing curry and appam. We had a table at the back but they moved us right on the edge of the harbour as soon as the table got free. It was stunning at night. The restaurant lit up and the harbour view. Go for the food. Go for the view. But also go for the staff who want you to enjoy. Amazing combination.

The perfect spot to explore Kochi The perfect spot to explore Kochi

Fort House is situated between the busy centre of the old town of Fort Kochi and the historic area of Jew Town - each a 10-15 walk or 5 min tuk tuk ride, meaning you have a quiet spot but very easy to get around. The rooms are fairly basic, but clean and comfortable, with all rooms overlooking a pretty main courtyard and fantastic restaurant on the pier (perhaps the best thing about the hotel). Staff were helpful with any queries and the Pepper House Cafe next door does great food and coffee. A very comfortable and happy stay for the few days we were there.
