Arrived in fort Cochin & got a rickshaw driver to take us to this homestay. He took us to the wrong place and there was a little bit of a mixup as he didn't know where thanathil was. Turns out, there's a guy who has many homestays in f.Cochin, and our host promptly came to pick us up & took us to the right place (which wasn't called thanathil - so make sure you get specific instructions/ contact details!) I'm not sure if the place has changed its name or if this guy has multiple home stays all under thanathil!
There are 3 rooms in this home stay- we got the twin bed room. It was clean & spacious with good bathroom. The veds had no sheet to sleep under but we had our own so wasn't an issue for us. Towels provided. We did have to ask on many an occasion for them to turn the water on so we could use the toilet/ shower/ sink but that was no big deal and they always turned it on with no issue.
WiFi wasn't great- had to sit on the stairs to get any functionality.
Location superb- right down the lane from Dhal Roti- delicious food, 10 mins to beach & right around the corner from main village hub & cathedrals. Quiet area.
Hosts were kind & helpful. Was more of a hotel stay compared to a traditional 'homestay' if you're looking for that.
Went to a kathakali performance which was good but long! Have some fish in banana leaf whilst your here too! Also saw all the general fort Cochin stuff- beach & Chinese fishing nets etc etc. - all good, no hassle!
We found fort cochin to be really chilled and lovely. Get the boat over from the mainland for r4 each after a rickshaw from the train station (prepay) and you're laughing.
I stayed at Thanathil on two occasions in 2013, for four days March and for two days in April. A new place, spotlessly clean & well maintained. Kitchen with free tea and a big refrigerator. The location was superbly quite, considering Kochi is quite busy, and a 10 mins easy walk to the tourist colonial centre and tourist restaurants. Also very close to local restaurants for those on a budget and super easy to jump on buses. The airport a/c bus passes right by the roundabout only 3 mins walk away. The place also has a roof for clothes drying and buckets in the bathrooms for hand washing. The mosquito nets in the rooms are new and in good condition, I stayed in 2 of 3 rooms, and the fans could be adjusted easily. For me the highlight was how I was treated and I saw others treated by the manager and owner, Faizal, who takes great pride in his business and the tourist well being. I felt very comfortable, he would help immediately if asked, but otherwise left me alone. The internet was reliable and with a good signal within the property. The only time there was an outage of internet was due to the govt transmitter and the whole of the town was down. It would suit long term too, as the kitchen had a new two hob gas stove. He also helped with baggage storage too, while I did a trip. All in all, and I've traveled a lot, for the local market, it was great value, comfortable, clean, quiet and a great owner.
