Great place to stay when visiting Fort Kochi Great place to stay when visiting Fort Kochi

by Graeme M on February 26, 2017

The old lighthouse hotel is a great location overlooking the Arabian Sea in Fort Kochi. It sits above Fort Kochi beach - 5 minutes walk from St Stephens Basilica and the Chinese Fishing nets. The hotel has it's own secluded grounds to relax and the restaurant offers good food and very friendly staff.

Beautiful building, excellent location and surprisingly good food! Beautiful building, excellent location and surprisingly good food!

After reading some of the negative reviews I was a little concerned about staying here but now I am glad that we did! It is true that the rooms are old and the plumbing is a little threadbare but it all worked and we didn't have any problems. The building is a gorgeous old bungalow situated right next to the beach. The views over the sea are really what made this place such a treasure. Several times we were able to watch dolphins frolic in the water within site of the hotel. Its true that there is no direct beach access but Kochi is not really a beach destination. If you really want you can walk about 100 meters and swim with the locals. There were quite a few folks swimming in the morning but I was happy to give it a miss. I've read some negative comments about the food but I can't see why. Yes the breakfast menu was limited but what was there was delicious and they always were happy to mix local food with our western breakfast. Lunch and dinner were great! The problem for the hotel is that there are so many awesome restaurants nearby its hard to keep guests from going out. The one time we did have dinner we were treated to a beautiful sunset, a local music trio and some excellent seafood. The staff were extra helpful and I would be happy to come back again.

An elegant hotel An elegant hotel

We spent the first night of our two week holiday in Kerala at The Old Lighthouse. Ann Mary had kindly organised a taxi to meet us at the airport and this arrangement worked well. Our room was spacious, comfortable and elegant, with lovely views over the beach and pool. The food was good and the staff were very friendly and professional. The location of the hotel is superb.

Four friends stayed here after four weeks travelling and birding in South India. We were just looking for a rest before the long trek back to the UK. The location of The Old Lighthouse is very good. Very convenient for walking about Kochi. And just a short tuk tuk ride away from some of the famous sights. The Chinese fishing nets are visible from the hotel, which is facing the "right" way for lovely sunsets! The hotel is a little on the grubby side, sheets and towels are very grey and worn and the rooms could certainly do with a deep clean. We seemed to be always asking for help, broken shower, broken aircon etc. Things that should be checked on a daily basis after the rooms are cleaned, not left for guests to report. Breakfast was excellent. Dosa and honey highly recommended. We didn't have any evening meals here. In my view the Old Lighthouse is good re location, but some of the cleaning issues need addressing and someone needs to "manage" it to ensure guests are happy and giving recommendations to their friends. It can be done.

Elegant and quaint Fort Kochi hotel by the beach Elegant and quaint Fort Kochi hotel by the beach

Quaint, tasteful, well-run and conveniently located on the coast in central Fort Kochi, with stunning sunsets. Our pre-paid taxi ride from the airport during a mid-day weekday took about an hour; taxi cost: $20. This hotel's staff is professional, courteous, available, responsive and friendly. Rooms are sun-filled, spacious and comfortable with the AC. Great pool. Short walk to chinese fishing nets, esplanade, shops, restaurants, Naval Museum and other worthy sites. Short rickshaw ride to Synagogue. Dining room is clean and elegant, perfect for the generous, tasty breakfasts with gorgeous water views - Sreekant is especially warm, knowledgeable and helpful navigating the robust South Indian breakfast choices. Live classical Indian music in the evenings. Fort Cochi is famously a peaceful and relaxing place - this hotel amplifies that experience. During our area walks we wandered into some of the more-stately looking hotels nearby, and while they had their pluses, none memorably enveloped us with the depth, overall breadth and authenticity that we felt at the Old Lighthouse. Before arriving, we considered booking elsewhere - now, having stayed here, we are so content with our choice we're certain we'd stay here again. Best wishes for your trip.
