After staying three nights with two Coorg families - Coluvanda and Tirtheera - our last stop was at Woodpecker, with Machamada family. Set at a valley after driving through the steep narrow road - the woodpecker is a lovely place to stay. We received warm welcome from the family - Sharmin, Princy, their son and Sharmin's mother - all came out and met us. We checked in. Rooms were large, clean. Later went to visit Iruppu and a short drive inside Nagarhole before meeting them again in the evening. Sharmin and we kept on chatting amidst the rain that resumed after darkness set in. Tea, warm soup kept on coming. And then the dinner. Chicken curry, delicious dal and the best pandi curry we ever had. Heavenly. And desert was a pleasant surprise - homemade gulab jamun. The location of the homestay is bit difficult to find - and mobile signal is very unreliable here. But the lovely mountain stream that flows behind the homestay will compensate everything. We spent morning by chasing the birds in the plantation. Sharmin introduced us to the tribal families that work in his estate. Go for it, if you love to indulge in Coorgi cuisine, drink the essence of nature to the fullest, and want to have the warmth of the caring family.
