The hotel was delightful with old world charm, but with benefits of the modern life. Staff were wonderfully helpful and kind. The Elgin seemed to me to be the best positioned hotel in Darjeeling with great views, although in February it was a bit cloudy. The Elgin is a great place to stay and we both would love to be back.

It will depend on which room you get at the Elgin as to of much you enjoy it. .: many are light big and airy.Some internal rooms are a bit gloomy.The staff tried hard ,not always successfully ,to please.Some nice person even planted some weed in the window box outside our room..but like Bill Clinton we didn't inhale!(joke..note to self as I sip my Indian chenin blanc reading Fear and loathing in las Vegas..drugs are bad for you).We found it clean and a pleasure to come to and is fantastically located to walk from.Just one request of the management..please have the piano tuned

Stayed there for our marraige anniversary celebration from 10th to 14th february 2017.had a lovely experience.since we booked a five star heritage resort we were expecting all the opulance and grandeur of a five star property.but we were plesantly surprised by the behaviour of all the staffs.they acted as our family members in our celebration.if dedicated staff is the key to the sucsess of an organisation then Elgin darjeeling should be the study model for any business school.obliged to have enjoyed their hospitality.no words to describe the feeling.

The hotel is very near to the Chawrasta . Harldy 5 mins of walking. The interior was AMAZING!!! They upgraded us to the suite room and it was brilliant with the Bonfire set up inside the living and bedroom both. Staff was excellent and so was the food. Breakfast and Dinner was amazing and we really enjoyed the food. Special thanks to the person playing piano. That made our dinner more memorable. I'd definitely recommend this hotel. They have very cute dogs with whom you can play as they are very calm and lazy :D :D

We booked to stay at the Elgin for 5 nights in February (3-8 Feb) through Agoda. After two nights we decided that we didn't want to stay there any longer because it was a dismal and deeply depressing hotel. The public rooms were attractive but that is the only positive thing that could be said of the hotel. The staff particularly the reception staff were apathetic and inefficient, meals particularly the breakfast was very poor, the fresh fruits finished very quickly and like many of the other dishes were not replaced, dinner was slightly better but the dining room was dark and dismal. Thy had a pianist who played from 7.30 to 10.30 non stop (we could hear him from our room which was directly above) and though he played very well and was a very pleasant man the piano was untuned. In addition he backed all the diners and faced a blank wall thoughout the evening and we felt for him. The table linen had stains and was not changed for each meal. The bed linen was very old and therefore didn't look fresh though it was probably clean. The bathroom was very small and the bath had no plug so you couldn't take a bath and when we asked housekeeping for a plug they said they couldn't give one because they wanted to conserve water. It was also very noisy and on the first morning we were there we were woken up at 6am by loud knocking which we thought was on our door but was on another door. It was not a friendly place and when we decided to leave we asked them if they would refund two days or at least one day and though Agoda tried their best, they were totally inflexible and wouldn't refund. We left and went to Mayfair hotel which was a few minutes away and we found a hotel which was completely different to the Elgin. It cost exactly the same. The staff were efficient and eager to please, the food was excellent and their breakfast and dinner buffets were varied and delicious. I was able to have a bath there as well. It was the last two days of our three weeks in India and we left with very good memories. We thought that the 260 which we lost was worth losing because otherwise we would have left India with a very sour taste in the mouth. We have visited India almost 15 times and this was our second visit to Darjeeling in about 7 years. We are well acquainted with India and we stayed in six hotels in various different places this time (Mussorie, Rishikesh, Amritsar, Kolkata, Darjeeling & New Delhi) ranging from 3-5 star and this was the worst experience. I can only assume that the positive reviews given by others are because they have not travelled very much in India or because they have low expectations. For the same money they can have an excellent experience at the Mayfair.
