We go to visit Darjeeling and stay at this hotel in Aug 2016. The rooms of this hotel are very good. Actually we booked room of hotel Valentino from OYO. The best part is you are able to see Kanchenjunga peak from the hotel room.
It's a well-maintained hotel with clean rooms and furnishings. The tariffs are reasonable. The staff is very polite, helpful and friendly. The room service is good albeit a bit late: a hallmark of almost all hill station hotels. The location is at the heart of Darjeeling, near the famed mall. The only issues are:lack of parking space if you bring your car and steep approach road.
We booked 6 double and 1 quadra room for two nights through Oyo rooms. We were 13 adults along with 6 kids from age 2 years to 16 years. On the entrance of hotel there was huge garbage bin with intolerable smell. No power/generator for one day and night and totally dark whereas all other hotels have power. Rooms were okay, but hospitality was zero. Breakfast was worst we have ever had. During check out we were forcibly charged exhorbitantly by the staff. Very bad experience and later we moved to Sinclair hotel.
Upon arrival we were advised we had no booking. Booking was done through booking.com and we had a confirmation. The manager/owner confirmed they had missed our booking and they were now fully booked. They arranged for us to stay at another hotel that was of a much lower standard but as Darjeeling was fully booked out we were happy they found us a room at all. We stayed only one night at the substitute hotel and two more at the Valentino Hotel. The first room had a beautiful view of the mountains. We had to change rooms for the second night. This room was also of a high standard. Both rooms were clean and comfortable. However neither had hot water available at any time during our stay. The low rating also relates to the constant interruptions by staff to our attempts to enjoy a relaxing holiday. Even to the point of simply knocking and entering the room without being invited in for things that could be attended to at the doorway and this occurred even at late hours. Staff though were generally friendly and went out of their way to make amends for the earlier lost booking incident. The meals in the restaurant for all meals was a buffet style, including desert. All the meals were tasty but by day 3 it was a little tedious as it was all similar. Three points that should be noted about Dargeeling is that there is a lack of sufficient water to serve the town especially during peak tourist season so there are times when there is no water for showers or toilets. Complaining loudly in the hallways merely disturbs the other guests and doesn't fix the water shortage. Point number two is that there are frequent power outages. Usually not lasting for too long. Again complaining loudly in the hallway will not make the power come back on any quicker. Thirdly, many of the hotels have no road access and therefore require walking to and maybe the hiring of porters to carry luggage up the reasonably steep hills.
The charge of the rooms is very high and the first impression of the hotel is Horrendous with a stinky garbage bin welcoming you and causing a big menace of flies in the area and inside the hotel. The hotel is located in a small lane adjacent to the main market area however the approach road is VIP and has restricted access. Walking from the drop/ pickup point is about 100 mts but is very tedious due to the hilly gradient. The good part is the hotel staff led by Mr. Solomon and his team are all courteous but are all new due to the change in management and undertrained and have not bee provided with the requisite infrastructure by the management to tackle problems during heavy onrush of guests. There was a severe power and water problem on the second day which the staff were struggling to tackle in vain. The presence of one of the owners also could not make a change to the sorry situation and many guests were without a bath and breakfast was delayed and was inadequate causing further delays in sightseeing which should ideally be done on time for convenience. The room given was very good with excellent beds and blankets and carpeted floor. The view on the front side is also exotic overlooking the town but the windows cannot be opened due to the heavy infestation of flies. The toilet was the biggest letdown as it is very small compared to the big room. The flush system was nonfunctional even after the hygience compliance tag on the seat clearly indicating a superficial room readiness by the staff. The same was repaired but started overflowing and leaking and was never repaired till the end of stay. The hotel has a concierge Mr. Sandeep, who is an excellent trip coordinator and with good experience and contacts, but he operates from miles away in Siliguri and has no on ground update on the hotel condition to give any kind of directions. The restaurant is good in looks but food was not very attractive and many items as per menu are not available, however room service is available. The non availability of the WIFI throughout the stay added to the woes. The hotel was kind to compensate with some reduction in the bill but it was too less compared to the services which were not offered or partially offered and the mental agony which went with it. Overall a TERRIBLE experience.
