This hotel "Crystal Palace" is located at Arithang, which is not the heart of the town, but close to MG marg. There are a few rooms with views of the hills. The rooms are decent, service and food ok. Availability water was a problem. Overall, this place is a good choice.

We stayed in the Prestige Room. It was decent, with all the facilities. We had all our meals in the restaurant, and they were amazing in taste. The service provided by the staff was wonderful. We would definitely recommend this hotel to our friends and relatives.

Sikkim trip with family Sikkim trip with family

by SahanHossain on April 24, 2016

This has been a long awaited trip which I planned to visit in January 2016 but considering extreme winter conditions I decided to visit in March 2016 as I was accompanied by my family which included a 2 year old child. We boarded the Padatik express on 25 March 2016 at 11:00 pm and reached NJP on next day at 09:30 am. The cab driver was waiting outside the NJP station and we boarded the cab to start our journey for Gangtok. It was a long (05 hours and 30 minutes approximately), tiring but was I wasn't ready to lose a single glimpse of the nature around me. My sister and her child was unwell and due to long journey and it is always advisable to carry medicines while you travel to higher altitude. Initially, I was tensed looking at their health conditions as they started vomiting. After stopping at the road side restaurant they had some food and medicine which was relieving and we carry on our journey to Gangtok. On our way to Gangtok via Sevoke forest the weather was very warm and for the first time I witnessed bush fire which was something I never expected to see on that part of the state. The journey continued we enjoyed the picturesque beauty of the nature with the Tessta river flowing and find many foxes, monkeys roaming around the forest ares. As we ascended towards the higher altitude the weather was cooler and on approaching Gangtok it appears to me a metro city with multi-storey builing as high as 10 - 12 storeys. My hotel was Hotel Crystal Palace situated at Upper Arithang Opposite AIR Quarter and it goes down a loop. We were all tired after a strenuous journey and had to take 2 - 3 hours of rest before we went out for a evening visit at the MG Marg. The taxi drivers are always over charging the tourist and no one can escape the high charges. They charge tourist a minimum of between 150/- or 200/- even if you want to travel for 1 - 2 Km. The evening was amazing with people walking on MG Marg and it was no driving zone which was a good part. As a tourist you never want the cars around you and you want to check the shops or restaurant. We visit a local restaurant which included a sweet shop and wanted to have some sweets and momo which is a speciality of the Himalayan people. The clothes are quiet expensive and I'll find the same one here in my home city at the same price. After an evening at MG Marg we returned to our hotel to have the dinner. We slept early to get up in the morning for our next destination North Sikkim. I have a habit of sleeping less hours while traveling and got up early morning at 05:00 am. After taking a bath I went out for a morning stroll the sky was cloudy and there was no way to see Kanchanjunga but I went across many lanes to check if I can get a cup of tea which is a regular drink in my home city Kolkata. It was quite unfortunate that there was no tea shops all around the area. On returning to the hotel we had our break fast and took taxi to reach the taxi stand for North Sikkim. Sikkim has very strict laws on use of plastic, littering which is penalized. There is same kind of restriction on big vehicles Tata Sumo, Innova, Xylo which have to operate outside a radius of 3 kms from the city area to avoid traffic jams. On reaching the taxi stand of North Sikkim the driver was getting the permit approved for the North Journey which is only available for Indian and no other nationality. I'm unaware if there is anyway to arrange for a permit for nationals other than Indian but throughput the journey I couldn't find any foreigner going to north Sikkim. We boarded the cab for North Sikkim and it was approximately 140 Kms to Lachung. The BRO (Border Road Organization) is responsible for the roads construction and hats off to them for maintaining the road which is very difficulty due to frequent landslides. We came across many water falls and the roads were scary but couldn't take the eyes off from the window as the nature was green all throughout until will reach Naga falls from where we can see the snow capped mountain. We stopped at Mangan for a lunch and continued for the journey with the natural beauty of Chungthang. On seeing the beautiful scene by family was excited to reach Lachung and it started raining when we reached Lachung and the temperature dropped considerable. We were at an altitude of 9000 feets above sea level and cloud atmosphere was an amazing experience. We stayed for a night at the White Orchid hotel and the temperature dropped at night as low as -7 degress celcius. We didn't have enough sleep and as morning approached we had to get ready for Yumthang and Zero point. The road to the place was not good but the lush green pastures with the cattle grazing was like a dream with the snow capped mountain of Himalayas. On our way to Yumthang the winds was chilling cold and we had to keep the car window glasses closed as couldn't resist the wind. After we reached Yumthang we went to out and it was a wonderful scene with the river flowing. The water was cold and the crystal clear. Then we started to go towards Zero point and it started to snow on our way to Zero point. The snow flakes was showering and it was an amazing experience to witnessed the snowfall. The climate was so cold that it was challenge to take photos. The zero point was cloudy and my parents decided not to go further and stay in the car due to thin air and low oxygen. We enjoyed at the zero point playing snow with my sister, nephew and brother in law. After staying for about an hour we decided to back to Gangtok. We reached the hotel at around 06:00 pm and all of us was very tired and had to sleep for our next destination Tsomgo lake which is at a height of 12400 feet above sea level. It was a fortunate day as the sky was clear and view of Kanchanjunga was great. We were ready after the morning breakfast and the cab arrived on time to take us to the Tsomgo lake but the permit to the lake are issued after 10:00 am. We reached the taxi standing and had to wait for an hour for the permit to be issued which was not good. The driver informed that due to heavy snowfall Nathula and Baba Mandir was closed and the permit was issued till Tsomgo lake for all the tourist cabs. As we went through the check point our permit was checked and only Indian nationals were allowed. It was an army cantonment area with army barracks all around the place. There were many division of the army stay at the place and photography was prohibited until we reached the Tsomgo lake. The water was blue and the mountain was filled with snow. with Yaks all around the place. It was a best day for traveling as the weather was clear and we could enjoy the natural scenic beauty. This time we played snow along with my parents and my sister took a Yak ride with my nephew. We stayed there to enjoy the nature and pay snow for around 2 hours and suddenly the clod surrounded which was again unexpected as the weather on mountains is always unexpected. Overall it was a great day to enjoy and we returned back to Gangtok. We decided to take an evening walk at the MG Marg and also had to take something for the relatives. For the first time we had Thukpa which was a mixture of noodles and tamarind water and ingredients which was very spicy. On the next morning we went to see the local places which included a flower exhibition and many varieties of flowers were being displayed. After that we also visited the Enchey monastery which is located on the top from Gangtok city. The place was quiet and cloudy. Then we visited the Ban Jhakri Water falls and it was an amazing places for taking photos. We returned back to hotel for the lunch and started for the return journey to NJP. The hotel service was good overall and no complaints. My family wasn't ready to return and wanted to stay for some more time but the train ticket was booked and we cannot afford to cancel. The return journey was shorter and it took only 04 hours to reach NJP. We had our dinner at the local restaurant and boarded the train at 09:00 pm. We reach Sealdah at 07:00 am morning with sweet memories of Sikkim the Himalayan state. It was an amazing experience to spend time with my family and the environment was great which made me think to plan a next vacation.

2 minutes away from town center, this guest house (also a Youth Hostel) is in a quiet and friendly neighbourhood of Gangtok. Service is quite good and the rooms are well maintained. Had a good experience staying here.

First of all for going around gangtok - Take taxi roam here and there in the city and take some info You will not be at loss. Do not take package just arrange permits from hotels Going to north sikkim you get a cheap package from here. But But But Going to Zero point and Katao is not included in package any ways you will have to pay to the driver make sure you are clear on this point. took 10000 for lachung and yumthang valley 1N 2D Package. sounds bit costly should have been 8000. 2500 Xtra for Yumasemdong / Zero Point. Hotels rooms and service are nice but the hotel owner acted as a middle man and grabbed a lump some of around 4000 for his benifit Package should cost 7000 to 8000. Still nice experience in North sikkim
