Tropical yet local experience with botanical highlights Tropical yet local experience with botanical highlights

The hotel itself is a combination of the old world and new world. The design of the property is excellent. The courtyard has the insignia of the hotel embedded in the property. There are a variety of fruit trees - fig tree, mango tree, passion fruit (?) tree and a variety of plants. There was a beautiful ground plant close to the base of one of the trees with 3-4 leaves and pretty purple flowers. I had wanted to take a picture but the next morning they were gone -- I suspect the work of a gaggle of med students that descended for a couple of days. The owner said that he had a green thumb and it is visible in the environs. The room itself (2 rooms) was clean and spacious (one room had the bed, the other a double room with a refrigerator and a couple of chairs). Goa gets a ton of rain and so there appeared to be evidence of a little water damage on one wall. I happened to go in September during the monsoon. The TV has cable so you can keep up with the news, etc. The dining room is open (with roof) -- surrounded by greenery. The food is okay. The tea is great. If you do get a chance to eat at one of the local restaurants, the fish thali is marvelous (fish portion sizes are small). In general, there is little protein in the diet regardless of where you go. The owners are extremely involved in the day to day operations and look to actively meet your needs. The owner is also very well connected in Goa and if you have particular needs, he can probably help you find what you need. I was concerned about getting to the hotel and they have a reliable driver (his own business) who picked me up. In fact, I had business to conduct while I was there and Ravi was extremely helpful. Though he recommended places and waited for me while I got my business done. He wasn't a wallflower but actively assisted me in getting stuff done as I had to close up a house. This was a wonderful experience and I felt really taken care of while I was there. At every turn, when I needed assistance it was there. Also, the owners are always thinking about their guests and have connections with tour operators etc., to ensure that you get where you want.

This property offers an unique experience in Goa if you are fed up with the beach side resorts, noise and crowds. LOCATION: This is located approximately 7 Kms far from the beach (nearest beach Anjuna) in a village called Assagao. There are many heritage kind of houses and hotels situated in the area, but Astoria offers best environment among them all. It might be bit difficult to find the property for the one who is even familiar with Goa. You can depend on Google Maps it will lead right to the gates of this hotel. Mapusa Market is about 4-5Kms away from this hotel. HOTEL ATMOSPHERE: Its great indeed! Rooms are situated in between lush greenery and many nicely crafted landscapes. You need to climb few steps to reach the accommodating building. They do have a small open stage in the middle of the property where they conduct concerts... Life gets its pause when you witness a music concert in this environment. If you visit it during the off season it will offer complete privacy. We were group of 13 members and it appeared like whole property belonged to us throughout our stay. We enjoyed every moment to the fullest without a worry about disturbing others. ROOMS: When it comes to the room which accommodated us, it was quite disappointing. Poor Ventilation, Paint of wall & ceiling was showering down, some rooms didn't had refrigerators and some rooms were not having direct hot water facility. Another major problem we faced was Mosquitoes, they use to smoke our rooms once during the evening but that was not enough. I wonder why they didn't offer any kind of mosquito repellent. RESTAURANT: Restaurant is located in the front of property with rich green surrounding. Ambiance is basic but it gives a Nostologic feel. Architecture of the restaurant is of old style. It gives a great feel! Service is kind of okay, this restaurant is managed by a family. Managers are kind enough to take good care of guests. But the serving can get better. They take lot of time to serve! FOOD: In our 3 days stay, we tried many dishes. Some were good and some were really disgraceful! On first day we tried Chapathi, dal. It was really bad. Chapathi was quite hard and dal was tasteless. Same thing happened with chicken pops (as per my non vegetarian friend). Later we ordered Veg Fried rice which was good and we ordered it repeatedly. We also tried zeera rice once and regretted our decision. As sides, we ordered potato finger chips, which was really good. But I wish they have seasoned with pepper & salt. Even Veg salad became a good combination with drinks. It's an ideal place to have drinks in peace away from beach, hustle bustle of population. But when it comes to food it depends on your luck. HOSPITALITY: I read a lot about their hospitality, service as one of the best in town. But for me it didn't appealed much. Whatever we requested, they use to modify it or deny it. When we asked to provide a place to make a night out with drinks & music, they suggested to sit at restaurant. Then by midnight they asked us to move to the central stage area. It was quite embarrassing. They offer limited breakfast and act like miser for complimentary things. EVERYTHING ELSE: Its an economic option and this hotel can save a lot if you are in group. But, honestly don't try their food and save bit more as their food charges are slightly high. And take extra care while paying the bills. We got Rs.2600 difference due to calculation error in the final bill and I sorted it out. It has a spacious parking space. Don't depend on hotel managers to guide you about Goa. Its better to depend on Google. They do have Free Wi-Fi, you must ask them voluntarily for the password and it works only in the restaurant area. FINAL VERDICT: Its the most economic option in Goa with cool environment. They must improve hospitality and room condition.

After reading so many good reviews on MakeMyTrip and TripAdvisor I selected this hotel and finally I realized this is nothing just a kind of a guest house managed by a family. Rooms are very very dirty and we found several things which are really unhygienic and not worthy with the money we paid for the rooms. They do not have room service telephone so any time you want something you need to get down to reception. We found very bad smell inside rooms. Did not find proper lights as the room I stayed had no tube light or CFLs, only bulbs. Foods were good but expensive and not standard in quantity. Moreover you cannot order anything from menu chart as they have limited option to cook everyday. People attached with this hotel are very good and they give a good fare well when we left out. But 3 nights stay inside rooms was horrible and we cannot forget that. They have several pet dogs whose furs are found on cushions of dining chairs. So according to me they have many things to improve. They are very homely but they are charging professional hotel rates.

Value for money??!! Value for money??!!

I was here this week. Location is in a village about 5kms from Mapusa town and beaches within 8-10 kms radius -no amenities nearby. Hotel ambience is good with greenery all around and an Amphitheatre in the centre. Rooms are very big - we were given a double room which had a separate living room and bedroom with a high roof. Food is plain bad - fixed and tasteless. Complimentary breakfast is cold bread butter jam daily! Housekeeping and room service practically not there. Scooter hire they arrange on request. If they just improve the restaurant and food it will be more worthy for guests to enjoy the holiday experience.
