What a wonderful warm welcome and calming oasis in the melee of Jaipur What a wonderful warm welcome and calming oasis in the melee of Jaipur

This was our third hotel/homestay in India and each has been wonderful in its own way. Dera Mandawa is the smartest we've been to and its welcome after a day of hot travel was truly special. We were ushered to a huge and comfortable room and attended by staff who struck the balance perfectly between friendly and efficient. We ate well and for a reasonable price and I highly recommend it. We also had all our laundry done and ironed at a very reasonable price. I've read the review a couple of posts down from, I think it was, Avid David who moaned about air condition not being left on. I was incensed - has the fellow never heard of waste? Most decent people would have been more annoyed if the hotel did keep rooms unnecessarily cool. If you get the opportunity stay here.

A stunning and authentic homestay A stunning and authentic homestay

We stayed at Dera Mandawa for 3 nights before moving on to Udaipur, breaking our journey at Bundi and Bhainsrorgarh on the way (those detours come highly recommended by the way!). DM is a home that has been in the family for 300 years and they still live there. Set close to one of the old gates through which you enter the old city of Jaipur, DM really does offer a peaceful atmosphere where you can have some quiet time away from this bustling and somewhat hectic city. That said as it is in the centre you will hear noise (Jaipur is a noisy city) - if you want silence a homestay in the centre of town may not be for you. Service - the service was excellent. Staff were always on hand and happy to help with any queries requests you might have. The owner is also very hands on and seems to take a real pride in her home and making sure hat guests are happy. The rooms themselves feature many original features and are huge! Ours even had a second floor! As we were there for 3 nights we loved having the extra space. We did it find any cutting of corners as mentioned by another review and although we often turned off the a/c when we were out during the day found that our huge room cooled down very quickly. Finally the food - we ate breakfast and dinner here. In hindsight we would have eaten dinner here every night it was that good, some of the best we ate in India. As an extra we took a cookery class with the owner and would highly recommend this. You are provided with all the recipes and get hands on instructions on how to make some traditional Indian recipes which of course you get to eat as you go along. If we were to come to Jaipur again, we would definitely stay at Dera Mandawa.

Absolutely delightful ! Absolutely delightful !

Dera Mandawa is run on eco-friendly lines. It has palatial rooms with excellent bathroom facilities. We ate in the beautiful courtyard - a real oasis of calm with great food and daily specials. You can even have an Indian cookery lesson. A guaranteed warm welcome and you will love the rooms!

Lovely place but.. Lovely place but..

I can understand why most contributors rave about this place. The room was an amazing suite, very spacious with a minstrel gallery and separate seating area. The enclosed courtyard is lovely, both for breakfast and evening meal though you do have to get used to the incessant honking of car horns as the main road is very adjacent. The food was not amazing but quite ok. The staff are excellent- attentive, friendly and helpful. So what was the problem? The problem was that on arriving at around 4.30 in the afternoon the air conditioning was turned off and had obviously not been on all day (temperature had been around 35 deg C !). Unforgivable as it was you would have to think that it was down to someone's oversight. But then the following day, on returning at around 1pm, lo and behold it had been turned off again!! We had already endured one night with the thing going full blast in an endeavour to reduce the temperature to a bearable level and still barely being able to sleep to now be faced with the ordeal yet again There was other evidence of establishment trying to reduce costs, electricity obviously being one of them. There is little point in being provided with wonderful facilities if one the most basic requirements is not provided and make it impossible to enjoy them. In truth, for that reason I could have rated it one star only and unless there is a fundamental change in attitude to this I could not possibly recommend it to fellow travellers. For goodness sake Dera Mandawa just put your prices up 500 or even 1000 rupees a night and stop cutting corners!

A wonderful place to stay A wonderful place to stay

Well, what to add to previous reviews? we walked in from the outer courtyard to find an oasis of peace and tranquility where we were greeted by the Usha who gave us all the history of the building before being shown to our room and wow, what a room it was! beautifully decorated and massive area to relax after a long journey. Sadly our visit was for only 2 nights and we would have loved to have spoken at length to the owner who we met as we were leaving. We were made to feel very special indeed, many thanks
