Out of the Marigold Mould Out of the Marigold Mould

by Jeffrey R on January 17, 2017

My wife and I together with numerous family members went to India to attend a wedding in Jaipur. We stayed at the Diggi Palace Hotel. It is a Heritage hotel and as soon as you arrive it is obvious why it is. It is like stepiping back into the past. Diggi is a old very large house (or small palace) and is set in lovely grounds with trees and lawns and wildlife. The rooms are large with high ceilings and large private ensuites. Everything looks old and you don't expect things to work, but they all seem to. The bed is large and very comfortable and there is plenty of drawer and hanging space. The shower is not the best in the world, but the water is hot albeit after a little wait. The staff are all dressed in various uniforms which designate their role in this very quaint establishment, which is managed by a charming gentleman who goes under the name of Mr Wilson. The food in the restaurant is very good if you stay with the Inian part of the menu. EVerybody is very polite and the service is good albeit with some language issues and sometimes a bit slow. If you are used to modern western hotels, Diggi may be a bit of a culture shock, but we found it to be a delightful experience and recommend it highly.

Great Heritage property Great Heritage property

The property is great with sprawling lawns (thankfully, we departed in the lead up to the Jaipur Literature festival and hence was spared the noise and commotion). The rooms are huge and well kept, just like the property - however, the toilets could do with a bit of renovation. We also had an issue, as the rooms are so huge (and we stayed here during an unusually chilly winter), that the heaters were not very efficient. The hotel staff led by Mr. Wilson is very warm and friendly; they in fact adjusted some amount as we cancelled one day's stay. The quality of the food and taste is certainly one of the best. A special mention to Mr. Gyan, from the restaurant staff, who instructed the kitchen to make non-spicy food during all meals that we had here. Would recommend this property any time (however, please check if there are weddings or the Lit fest happening here, in advance!)

A delightful stay! A delightful stay!

I stayed at Diggi Palace again in November and enjoyed my visit as much as the first time. There is a certain charm of Diggi, from the spacious lawns to the large rooms with comfy beds and tasteful decor, it is certainly a place to spend time and enjoy it. Breakfast is served on the lawn as well as an evening show goes on during the tourist season. We were treated to a grand Diwali party (complete with fireworks and elephants) and it is an experience never to be forgotten. Well worth a visit.

The property is beautiful. The breakfast in the lawns is outstanding. And the views in the morning with peacocks over the property, just mesmerizing. However, the only drawback was the attitude of the gentleman at the front desk. I found him to be really curt. I was checking in with a friend and he was purposely rude. Someone had used (and not flushed!) the restroom in the room allotted to us - and we did not hear a sorry from the manager for that. Instead, he made it seem that he was doing a favour by moving us to another room. Staff other than him was very nice and genuinely helpful.

Gorgeous Havali away from the hustle & bustle Gorgeous Havali away from the hustle & bustle

The photos on the website does it no justice as in reality Diggi Palace certainly surpassed our expectations. As you go through the main entry gates a whole entire oasis opens up revealing the most beautiful white and blue facade ( really reminds me of their famous block printing) & as you look to your left - an amazing garden unfolds. Hardly anyone sits inside to dine even on the crisp winter mornings as this garden bears a magical feel with squirrels, peacocks, parrots and other beautiful birds are constantly infusing this garden with their activities and sounds. The squirrels especially make this terrible sweet high pitch chirp and are super friendly. Our room was huge with a generous size bathroom and all the typical beautiful Indian furniture. Good A/C, comfortable bed & tv laden with the most amusing music, dancing and Indian TV series mostly laced with English sentences as it's currently the cool thing in the film industry. Service was great although we found the manager a little unhelpful at times. This beautiful Havali is well maintained and the food menu has a good variety of dishes. Complimentary breakfast is delicious and I couldn't get enough of the masala chai. There's is always ambient indian tunes playing in the background which is very soothing and meditative. Celebrated NYE at the hotel which was an eye opening experience. The Indians certainly do not muck around when it comes to parties - they laid out a long buffet setting embellished with a million fairy lights, traditional dance, very loud dance music (which was a tad inappropriate when you were eating) and dance floor. It turned out to be a really fun evening with a colorful mix of western and Indian Bollywood moves on the dance floor. Only criticism we have is the wine prices should not be so high. Otherwise we love this hotel and would definitely come back. Diggi Palace totally made our trip and made me feel like a maharani.
