Restaurant Desert Eves, Hotel Suraj Vilas inside Jaisalmer fort. My wife and I are not good at deciding on a restaurant together. However, tonight was different. We found one which suited us both to the ground. Menu looked OK (although given in a paper homework folder which I think the cow got), views were nice and the sun was setting. Everything was looking great. So after ordering our food, the owner approaches our table and we get into a friendly conversation. As the chat continues he decides to steer the conversation to a subject that no hungry customer wants to hear. He informs me that cheaper prices are outside the fort (fair enough we thought, that's to be expected), the portions are bigger (fair enough maybe?) and the quality is much better outside the fort (come on pal? What's the point of me sitting here!?). My wife and I were completely baffled by this and question why he has said this to paying customers waiting for their 'over priced and terrible food' to be cooked. He states 'it is too late for you, you have already ordered. You cannot leave'. He repeated this over. We left immediately. We bumped into our friend on the way back to our hotel after eating a nice place called Monica Restaurant. He asked us not to post our experience on trip advisor stating 'it is not good for anyone to do so'.
We stayed 2 nights in Jaisalmer, one night at Suraj vilas hotel and one night in the desert (safari organized by the hotel). Let's begin with the good points. Lala kindly waited for us at the train station during 2 hours at night (our train was very late); the super deluxe bedroom was amazing, a wonderful place, we felt like we were in an old palace; great view on the Jain temples from the roof top. We planed to do a camel safari, we wrote Chimmy (Lala's brother) before arriving to ask information, he told us it was possible but didn't answer our question about the price, that we asked at least twice. When we met him, he told it was 2250 roupies per person for one night in the desert, leaving at 2pm and coming back at 11am. He told us that we would camp 60km from Jaisalmer and that we would ride camels 2 hours each day. We thought it was a bit expensive compared to the market price but everything was included so we trust him. When we arrived at the sand dunes (after only 1 hour on the camels), we were really disappointed because there were not so many sand dunes -we thought it was deeper in the desert-, there were many tourists and we were surrounded by lots of wind meals. We really enjoyed the evening with the camel guides who were very friendly and cooked us an excellent meal. The day after, we spent only 45 minutes on the camels and we were back at the hotel at 9:45am. We really appreciated that they let us a room to have a shower. When Lala asked us how was the safari, we explained all the reasons why we were disappointed and said that we would appreciate to talk with Chimmy. Lala apologized and said it was the first time, so we expected a goodwill gesture. In the end, we didn't see Chimmy before leaving and didn't have any goodwill gesture. That's too bad because despite many positive points, we left with negative feelings, so we hope we were just unlucky!
Our stay at hotel Suraj was definitely our best stay in India. The rooms were exactly as shown on the pictures: very authentic. It is just like centuries ago. Don't expect a modern bathroom. That won't match with the authentic building. The room, bathroom, sheets and towels were all clean. The family who runs the hotel is extremely friendly. They definitely know what hospitality is like. They arranged our overnight desert safari, which was perfect. It was a private safari at a quiet part in the desert. No fancy dance show or other touristical stuff, but just us and a perfect guide and cook in the desert. Sleeping just under the stars on a bed, provided with plenty of blankets. That was an awesome experience. If you are looking for a combination of going back in time and going back to basic in unspoiled nature, book a room at Suraj and let them arrange the safari!
Had a great stay at Hotel Suraj. Staff are friendly and accommodating. Basically right next to the Jain temple with an awesome rooftop area for delicious food and watching the sun set. Rooms are clean and tidy but hot water takes a little time. Ask for extra blankets as it gets cold at night in Jaisalmer.
Lala is a fantastic host and the place is very comfortable. Amazing rooftop to eat and chill out on. Hot water, clean beds, great food and close to everything. It is right next door to the Jain temple.
