We spent an evening at Sam sand dunes - camel ride at sunset set which was a great experience followed by Rajasthan dancing and buffet dinner. Really enjoyed it and there are lots of camp sites to choose from though we didn't stay the night as we preferred a hotel in Jaisalmer. The camps are expensive and looked fairly basic to us, you can enjoy the sand dunes experience, dancing, dinner, etc. and go back to your hotel later.
I had never seen desert before and I was very excited when I got to know that as part of our Rajasthan tour we would be spending one night in desert within tents. We reached the camp after having lunch from the hotel. We saw many such camps down the road and they all looked kind of similar in layout and decoration. We got allocated a corner tent. As we climbed the few brick steps to our tent....we were very excited as this was our first tent experience on this scale. The off-white tent structure from the front is just like any movie setting. When we lifted the door of the tent (the door is made of the same heavy material as the tent with arrangements to be secured if needed).....we entered the tent and were completely taken aback! It was unbelievably cosy and looked very roomy and spacious. They had provided a king size bed with side table and chairs. There was also a table and lampshade. We were even more surprised when we lifted the second door cloth and saw the toilet-bathroom. It looked just like it would in any hotel and not in the middle of the desert and that too inside a tent!!! It was equiped with modern amenities and even gave warm running water! We had our afternoon tea sitting outside the tent, in the chairs provided, and enjoyed the desert scene and air. During this time we found out about the private desert safari tours that are conducted here. They cost about 200 rupees per person and they take you in an open gypsy. One can also book the whole gypsy.....but there is no need to that as finally all reach the same destination....thats the middle of the desert for the sunset view. Riding in an open gypsy, full speed, cutting through the desert sand, going up and down the dunes.....it felt surreal. Almost as though in a movie. The ride lasted around 15-20 minutes and we reached a common base location in the middle of the desert from where the sunset can be seen unobstructed. There were also various camel riders around, sitting huddled at small tea shacks or bargaining with tourists for camel rides. The costs for a camel ride will depend on how much adventure one seeks. I was pretty scared to get on a camel....but was coaxed and made to finally ride one. The ride was....well....bumpy. I am not riding a camel anytime soon again. But my family enjoyed it very much. The riders wanted to take us far in the desert (for more money ofcourse) but we declined and rode only nearby. Soon the sunset was upon us and I watched one of the most beautiful sunsets yet. Believe me...I have watched sunsets in many places....even in different states....but a sunset in desert is truly amazing. For a minute everything around is glowing, if not golden. Its peaceful....and I just wanted to keep sitting on the sand and keep watching the sky. Once the sunset was over, the whole camp came back to life again and the gypsies scrambled back to the tents we started from. While returning they do not ride on the dunes again as its dangerous during dark. We returned via the road. We had our evening tea and snacks outside our tents and then watched a complimentary traditional Rajasthani song and dance show organised in the centre of the campsite. Its goes on till quite late. We loved the show. There is also a fully functional restaurant which has some good menu items, though we did not eat here as our group had our own cook. I could never imagine that one can have so much fun and luxury in the middle of the desert. Not only did I finally see the desert...but I lived and enjoyed there.....even though for just a night. I still look back to my stay with fond memories. One day I plan to revisit my steps again in the desert.
I will recommend it to all tourist who wants to live in desert but with luxury. They are very professional and will arrange you camel ride and all stuff you want. They have very good arrangement of food & very good folk dance along with campfire. It is far from city but you cannot feel that.
