Remarkable Remarkable

by Paul N on March 26, 2017

We went there for lunch and they charged nearly $100 a head just to get 'in the door' and I never thought I would write this: it was worth it! They include a private tour of the extraordinarily beautiful and exquisitely appointed palace, champagne in hand, and gifts of not inconsequential value on our departure. In between was a five star dinning experience appropriate to one of the highest rated hotels in the world.

Reasons This Splurge Is Worth It Reasons This Splurge Is Worth It

For starters, how often can you rent a room in one of the world's two largest palaces? Since the other one is Buckingham Palace and Queenie Elizabeth II prefers to keep the commoners away, the Umaid Bhawan is your only option. And what an option it is! Upon arrival, hotel guests receive an impressive royal greeting. Then guests are ushered into the palace, greeted by a magnificent double spiral staircase constructed of the finest marble. Moving beyond the royal staircase, one enters the rotunda, built on a scale that rivals all but the largest. The UB Palace was constructed in the 20th century, funded entirely by the ruling maharajah. The local narrative is that he decided to build the palace in the late1920's, at the outset of the Great Depression, so that 3000 locals could be gainfully employed. This particular gig kept them busy for 15 years. Eventually, the maharajah decided the his family could downsize into the west wing. One can imagine the hardships of getting by with only 100,000 square feet of living space, something the maharajah's family does to this day. Since the pillaging of rivals and taxation of locals is no longer in fashion, the royal family is able to supplement it's now comparatively meager earnings by using the rest of the palace as a hotel, sort of an airbnb on a genuinely royal scale. We are glad they made this business decision because we truly felt that this may have been the greatest hotel experience of our lives. Our suite was palatial, beautifully furnished with a deck that had a view of the Mehrangarh Fort which is the top draw in Jodhpur, with the likely exception of the Umaid Bhawan Palace itself. Every day, trays of chocolates and elegant, intricate desserts appeared in our suite, as if by magic. The room was supplied with large crystal decanters of vodka and scotch. The suite was provided with two unique sets of embroidered bathrobes, one thick and comforting, the other feathery light and sumptuous, perfect on a hot summer day. The grounds are impeccably maintained, better than any park we saw on our tour around India, including the lovely grounds at the Taj Mahal. The indoor pool is perhaps the most exotic, atmospheric we have ever seen. It is difficult to describe the many features and amenities available to palace guests. From a billiards room straight out of an English hunting lodge to a bar out of old Africa to a business center suitable for negotiating the Treaty of Versailles, the UB Palace simply has every excess one can imagine and more. The service was impeccable and thoughtful, anticipating our needs and seemingly operating on the principal that "whatever a guest requests, let's give them more than that." We had a thoroughly delightful experience and would return again and again, if only Jodhpur wasn't halfway around the world from where we live.

we had a wedding there. the service was superb n people were available to take care of our needs so readily. esp. tanishka who was with the bride-she was so reliable n a calm presence by the brides side and cos of her, the family was able to relax and communicate whatever was needed to be taken care of for the bride. a great experience on the whole

Supreme opulence and comfort!!! Supreme opulence and comfort!!!

We were really amazed by our experience at the Umaid Bhawan. The pictures suggested an incredible palace, and the actual experience was even more so! Being in a historic space the dimensions of this palace was awe-inspiring. The palace had many amenities and services to enjoy, and the staff was extremely attentive and accommodating. We were treated like part of the Royal family, and offered service as such. we ate in the hotel, and spent as much time there as we could schedule in. The photos on line only show a snapshot of the hotel and its grounds, so I ill post some of my own.

Great service, great food, and facilities. The "awe" factor you feel walking into the domed great hall is unforgettable. It is truly one of those places you don't want to leave. Everyone there goes out of their way to make sure your stay is memorable. And they succeed
