I can't believe places like the blue mermaid exist in India. We had been travelling around for a few weeks, feeling a bit tired and weary and like we'd been fleeced one too many times, and then we found this place. It was everything we wanted: mainly and most importantly, the hosts are phenomenal. Indu and her husband Pradeep are lovely. Welcoming, kind, helpful, sweet, honest, friendly. Indu is the most fantastic cook, and daily serves delicious, authentic, healthy and varied breakfasts and dinners. There's no lunch, but the morning/ evening meals are so generous you don't need it. (if you do you want stroll into the village and buy things very cheap). A lot of the food cooked is from the garden - Pradeep is a phenomenal Gardner - not only does it look brilliant (there are beautifully kept trees, lovely flowers, excellent hammocks) but he has a whole range of vegetables that indu uses in her cooking. The property backs on to the river which is great for day time walks, some ace wildlife spotting. And is fronted by a beach that, when we visited, was deserted. Heaven. The sea is the best mix of calm and wavy (depending on the time of day) so perfect for swimming. Staying here felt like being part of the family, so much so I almost didn't want to write this review as it means more people will come....but after the kindness indu and Pradeep showed us I felt I had to give something back. The rest of the staff are brilliant too. They were also great at helping us organise travel and local trips (if you come and stay it's certainly worth visiting the local cooperatives and generally exploring the village - everyone we met is lovely and keen to chat).
All in all, felt this was the best place I've stayed in India. Not a bad word to say, and very much hope to return some day.
Lovely hosts, wonderful place, fantastic beach. Indu and Pradeep made our experience feel like Heaven on Earth. Only a grumpy cinic could dislike a stay at Blue Mermaid... If only they would serve real Kerala coffee, it would be perfect.
Blue Mermaid was definitely the most relaxing time we had in India. Rare perfect combination of clean rooms, great food and extraordinarily attentive hosts without being too much. After I left Indu even sent me my phone which got stuck in customs. Can't recommend enough,
There are these rare places when you travel that make you want to come back. We certainly will return to Blue Mermaid. Indu and Pradeep and their staff are the most lovely hosts you can imagine. I had a cough and got hot ginger tea throughout the day. Indu even called up the next place we went to ask our new host to continue the treatment. Food is georgeous, rooms are excellent, large, bright all looking out into a beautiful and well maintained garden. Just behind you get to Thottada beach. Want to relax? Go here. Great walks along a river that runs alongside the compound, fantastic beach a 15 minute walk away over a headland, called Kizhunna beach. Miles of bliss. Don't miss out on attending a thayyam ceremony. What else. Just go, its haven.
This homestay has been my favourite place so far in India. Beautiful setting by the sea with a quiet beach just in front of the garden. There are beautiful walks in the forest behind the house where you can bird watch and see the every day life pass by. The homestay is very well run. The rooms are very clean and large and there are places to sit and hang out in the beautiful garden. Indu and Pradeep are so welcoming. They are such lovely people who will do everything to make your stay the best ever. They truly look after you like you're at home. We stayed 6 days and the food, cooked by Indu was delicious and varied every day. I can't recommend this place enough. We will definitely return as it is the kind of place you don't really want to leave. You can call it home. Don't forget to ask about the Theyyam ceremony if you are there in the winter months. Thank you so much Indu and Pradeep.
