My family decided to go for a one day trip to Kanyakumari since it's just 70-80 Kms away from Trivandrum by road. The moment you enter Kanyakumari you are asked to pay a toll of Rs. 50 (or its whereabouts), this is levied by Kanaykumari cooperation as Tourist Tax???. Finding Hotel Amutham Residency was very easy as it was bang on the road. Outward appearance was OK. They have a big non airconditioned lobby, lavishly furnished with cosy sofa sets where you can relax and read newspapers and periodicals. Now for the staff manning the reception, there was just one person who could speak a smattering of English, other could only speak in Tamil, so tourist beware, you will have to have good knowledge of gesticulation. The hotel has a basement parking lot which was dumped with building materials, it seems they were in the process of renovating a section of the hotel. It should be able to accommodate at 10 to 12 cars. Anyway, the room was small but tidy, with a good Air conditioner and a Television with local channels. Thankfully the room came with an adjacent toilet cum bathroom which could be termed as acceptably clean. There was no room service nor was there a restaurant (it looked as if it would be added in the near future), no bottled water, though there water dispenser near the elevator, not sure how clean the water was, never tried it. I would put the overall experience of staying there at 3 out of 5.
