It's not often that you walk into a hotel to be greeted by the matriarch, welcoming you with a big gentle smile into her world. As soon as we set foot in the Bangala we were treated with utmost care and hospitality. The owner and her manager and helpers took time to find out a little about their guests and treat everyone with the same impeccable old school courtesy. It's central to Chettiar culture (along with some of the best food we've tasted in India) and I would be glad if people in the "hospitality industry" could take lessons here. The place itself has a colonial air, marble floors and shady verandas, old teak furniture, alongside modern amenities, a lovely swimming pool that is always clean. A knowledgeable local lady (Unamalli) took us on a tour of Chettiar mansions and craft places. I could go on for hours... this is the place to stay in this area!

The Bangala at Karaikudi is a boutique hotel that is not only very very good on all fronts but actually really difficult to find any flaws on any front. Commencing from the much better than normal very personalized reservation experience, to a top class check-in on arrival, lovely room with period furniture and decor that blends with the character of the place, exquisite food (am sure I must have put on 5 kgs in 2 days), and the most fantastic guided trip to the houses around Karaikudi to enable me to take lovely pics of the great interiors of typical Chettiar homes. All credit to Mrs.Meenakshi Meyappan and her fabulous team at The Bangala esp Mrs. George and Mrs.Meenakshi Jr. Mrs.Meyappan was aware of my desire to take photos and she had taken special permission from some of the senior Chettiar family heads to allow us entry to their homes and also made sure that Meenakshi went along as a guide.Irrespective of what she may say modestly, her own home is probably the classiest. Places like the Bangala are crown jewels in an otherwise generally service deficient hospitality places and such jewels are far and few. Thanks you Mrs.Meyappan for one of the most memorable stay and this is coming from one who has been a discerning traveller at several boutique places around the globe - I rate your place as one of the best....keep it up and 3 cheers! And for the benefit of the other guests, do lay your hand on The Bangala Table - flavours and recipes from Chettinad and Mansions of Chettinad - both books are a collecter's delight esp if you are a photographer. All in all a great value for money and a must go place in your travel itinerary

This is the first time i was let down by TripAdvisor,having used it extensively for most of my travel.we went with the number 1 rating and boy were we let down.this place is plain daylight robbery 1.We were travelling with 2 kids a 1 year old and a 4 year old.on arriving at the place after a tiresome journey,we were met by a person who makes u feel like she is the headmistress and laid down the house rules which are conveniently not mentioned in the website.it is COMPULSORY as per the hostel rules (ya this place makes you feel more like you are living in a hostel with wardens all around) to take a childrens cot whether your children sleep in it or not.for this they charge 1k.people travelling with children beware.this place is least kid friendly 2.coming to the cost.for the exhorbitant 8k they charge per room,the rooms feel like a slightly higher end lodge room.there are NO four poster beds or anything that makes the price satiable. I just dont know how they got reviewed.maybe they reviewed it themselves. 3.After all this another hostel warden says the ac is not functioning and asks us to shift to another room and shift back again in the eve because their stupid house rule states kids beds are mandatory. 4. I have not yet had the food but we have lost all appetite after enduring all this. Please people never ever reserve here.it is just a waste of money and plain daylight robbery. Attaching the threadbare flooring and looks like a newly bought bed in the room TripAdvisor was not allowing to post real review.so trying to reword.

Coming from Madurai into the busy area and suddenly passed a door and felt home! Great hospitality with simplicity and sincerity. Was traveling on my own and asked to have a table for dinner in a quiet area and the wonderful lady who is the owner of the place told me: no problem and there is another lady traveling on her own and if ok with you we can set up a table for the two of you. I met Stephany then Julie a charming photographer joined and the owner too. Later for dessert I joined the table of some friends of the charming owner lady and had such a great time! All was perfect and you even have mosquito repellent in your room! I loved it and... might come back. Thanks a lot to the Bangala team for making me feel home!

My wife and I unhesitatingly chose the Bangala to take some family and friends too celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary. This was our third visit there, so we knew what to expect from Mrs. Meenakshi Meyyappan, and her excellent team. Neither 'Aachi' nor her team let down our aspirations. Our guests were blown away by the oasis within Karaikuddi, the superb build of the new block of rooms, the cleanliness of the resort, the smooth effectiveness and hospitality of the team that looked after us...and the FOOD, GLORIOUS CHETTIAR FOOD! The latter-most can't really be described....you need to go there, taste it and be marvelled...all those certifications by various organisations barely do justice. It is a benchmark of hospitality set by a matriarch, and an almost 'santa's elves' flow to the whole experience!
