We booked the Guest House through booking.com for three of work colleagues, two of who were foreigners. Having had a good experience earlier at the Wise Owl Cafe we assumed the Guest House would be equally good.
Unfortunately the Guest House does not receive the same attention. It looks a little dowdy and is not well maintained. When our guest was checking in we noticed the room was dusty. When we pointed it out, the service boy didn't see it as a problem and tried to wipe away the dust with his hands!
We had alerted the guest house that one of our guests would be arriving late at night. Yet when she came, the guest house was pitch dark. When the guard switched on a light she was taken aback to see the cafe staff all sleeping, bundled on the cafe floor. Our guest had to weave her way through the sleeping bodies and navigate through dim dark corridors. She was quite alarmed!
On the first morning our guest had to go down to ask the staff to put the pump on as there was no water. The shower was not working and the hot water was a trickle. The other guests didn't realise how long one had to wait for the water to heat and did not get any hot water. They also struggled with switches and power outlets not working. Instructions in the room would have helped, especially since all the staff are not fluent in English.
Breakfast was a real disappointment for all our guests with cold, hard toasts and poor omelettes. Considering the excellent cafe downstairs it was odd to not provide a better breakfast.
Our guests were happy with the WiFi coverage. Perhaps had we got rooms on higher floors maybe they would have been brighter with better views. On the first floor the rooms overlook a dump and you can hear the traffic from the streets.
The rooftop restaurant was a delight however. It has a lovely ambiance and the food and service was good.
We had chosen this guesthouse because of the location but not sure we would use it again unless the standards are improved.
I have been staying at this place for two years now, for every time I visit, feels like home. It all started from April 2014, when our company gave us corporate credit cards as they wanted us to have seamless travel experience without worrying about cash. I had to look for a good hotel which accepts CC, with the price in my budget and a easily accessible location, and there it was, suggested by a friend from the USA. I decided to check it out and to my surprise, it was better than the place I stayed earlier during my visits and dealt in cash only.
There are good and bad in all place - So don't expect everything was just perfect.
Located at Purna Das Raod, Hindustan Park, Calcutta, this place is accessible from all around the city by metro, bus, tram and of course our yellow cabs. Ola and Uber were add-ons later.
Apart from the good location, there are plenty of options in and around the area to hog on to anything starting from English, to French, to Chinese to our very own Indian and last but not least the filling huge Bengali cuisine.
The hotel is clean, well lit, safe, The building is under CC surveillance. Courier services are available - to send and receive packages and documents. Cab services are available at a affordable price. The coffee shop below is good, cozy and gives you a feel of a hill station. There is a steak house on top & it is yet to try. The only flaw is that the time consumed on a service is a little too long and at times your hunger dies off but never the less, the taste of the food makes it up for you and it's the same with the coffee shop and the hotel. The staff are very friendly and would attend to details when called for and trust worthy, late nights and drinks are not a problem at all. Overall - Satisfies you with a nice experience!!
Just returned from my second stay tenure of nearly 2 weeks. Wife and I love this place. First, its right above the Wise Owl cafe, what else do you need...great coffee with excellent continental dishes and pretty cool ambience. Staff at the guesthouse are so so helpful. Tinku and Manoranjan were always there for whatever we needed. The rooms are very comfortable but could definitely do better on the TV and fixtures. That's important too for a long stay. Overall, great place in a great location in a great city!
We have been visiting this Guest house for some time now. Recently we lived there for about TWO weeks for my daughter's weddig. Every time we have enjoyed the warmth of the managers and the service boys. They are always eager to help you. Any undue and challenging requests -they are always there with a personal touch and smile on their face. I cannot separate any particular service to talk about. The Food - you can order for an unusual item, that will be served to your taste, neateness of the room and ambince, closeness of great shopping place and topping all these is service. The associated restaurants - i have no words to describe the quality of food. Each and every invitees have come back to us to talk about the food they were served by 'Tero Parbon' during my daughter's wedding. Most of them were local and I believe they would be visiting local restaurants quite frequently. By their excellent guesture, I could measure how the food was. AND, the event manager Saibal as good as my young brother was always there to personally look after at each event. I may have met him just a month or two back - but never felt he was anybody other than my family member. I can only say I am fortunate to have been associated with this Guest house and the people. The Guest house managers had personally taken care that I am not made to spend unnecessarily for the other services e.g. Car hiring; Hall decoration; Shanai to say a few. I am sure, I will never have to look for any other place for stay when i visit Kolkata in future.
Best wishes to all of them.. Sakti Chatterjee from Bangalore
Great location in a comfortable clean neighborhood close to nice shopping and a gorgeous park. Off the main road, so relatively quiet. Easy to walk to the metro station (15-20 min walk). I enjoyed the setup of the rooms with plenty of table-space and a wardrobe to unpack my stuff for the week. I enjoyed having room service and wifi, and there was really nice genuine art in the hallways. It's so handy that there is a popular restaurant on the ground floor too. I just wish they had more vegetarian options, and the price was a bit high per night for my budget. People at the desk were most helpful, and it was nice to have 24 hour security as we came home very late from Durga Puja.
