it is on his way out! it is on his way out!

by serena b on December 28, 2016

I completely agree with the reviews below from UK visitors. this hotel is on his way out! I like heritage hotels ( we have been in very nice ones) but this is not well maintained at all! bathrooms are in real need of renovation. In our bedroom one window was not closing ( on an external terrace) they could not repair it, the manager was annoyed that we asked to change room ( despite we had just arrived so it was not a huge problem). But the worst idea was to dine there! the food was not bad but both my husband and I have been so sick that we had to take tablets! We have spent nearly 4 weeks in India and this is the only place we have been sick. The rooms are not good, the restaurant is dangerous.... I would not recommend it!

I wanted a Heritage hotel, this was not quite what I expected, but I enjoyed my 3 nights there. It is a faded beauty with a quirkiness about it. The staff was friend for the most part, management was so so. The palms all around the house were tended to daily as was the old house, dusting and polishing on going. They are full all the time, people were turned away everyday as I sat having meals. The food was good in the open dining room, and so reasonably priced. The other guests were an interesting group, they were older and looked like travelers, not tourists. Kolkata had a very different feel/energy than other large Indian cities and the Fairlawn was part of that. If you are not the usual traveler give it a try.

Faded old-world charm Faded old-world charm

We spent three nights here. The hotel is full of history and well located near all the main sites of Calcutta. The bedrooms are comfortable and functional. Sure some people will think they need updating, but we liked the faded charm. The public rooms are nice, with lots of interesting items on the walls. The beer garden was a relaxing place to have afternoon tea - although sadly due to some "police issues" they no longer serve beer. We enjoyed the breakfast and afternoon teas - both included in the room rate. We ate dinner one evening but were not impressed. For a quick cheap eat I would recommend the Bluie Sky Cafe across the road. For a nice evening meal there are lots of places in Park Street (10 mins walk). We particularly liked Peter Cat.

Sadly looks like it is on the way out! Sadly looks like it is on the way out!

Did not stay because booking was not avaialable on the usual websites. We visited twice today. Saw some rooms which are badly in need of updating. One can only imagine how it might have been when Vi was alive. Now it is looking extremely shabby and uncared for. Staff were welcoming and friendly but not particularly helpful. We had coffee there this morning and came back this evening intending to have dinner but the dirty tables and menus put us off so we just had a couple of beers and left. Felt like we had brushed with history but with only 4 others in the dining/garden area, one wonders if it can last for much longer.

Once the most famous hotel in the city Once the most famous hotel in the city

by h0rst1337 on November 10, 2016

Once the most famous hotel in the city. Today it is an endangered species. If compared to the standard hotel chains, it impressed us with the charm of a colonial guesthouse. The decorum is antiquish, lovingly collected. It is privately owned and the owners, two sisters, born before India`s independence, demonstrate their faithfulness to the British Crown in every corner of the house. The hotel has suffered some from the loss of the first owner who lived on the premise. Yet the personnel on duty is very helpful and friendly. Many intellectuals and writers have made the Fairlawn their home while studying the busy city. Perfect location to start your sight-seeing and shopping. Dont miss the Fairlawn. Demo Trip Some rooms are definitely sparse. Make sure you ask to see a couple rooms. Room 7 was nice.
