ITC Sonar is a hotel of choice during my stay in Kolkata, i wouldn't want to stay anywhere else.
The hospitality is very warm & impeccable. Each employee goes out of his way to ensure your stay is comfortable.
The Sonar as the name suggests has superior service compared to its peers in Kolkata.
With outstanding location (near airport) and great amenities this one is a repeat value
The options on the food was fantastic and the service for in room , restaurants and front desk are splendid
Well done ITC. Highly recommended
I was at this hotel recently ( from September 29th to October 2nd,2016 ) due to an Orthopaedic Conference called IASCON 2016. I must point out initially that I did not actually stay at this hotel, as I am from Kolkata an love my own bed to sleep at night
The hotel is rather iconic, but puny in size when compared to other bigger hotels coming up around the vicinity. Even ITC is building a mammoth structure aptly called ITC Royal Bengal (see my accompanying pictures) just beside the present hotel on EM Bypass, aka JBS Haldane Avenue
This hotel has a history, and was erstwhile known as ITC Sonar Bangla, then changed to ITC Sonar in the later years. Facade and structure never altered though with time, and now looks really dated and in need of a serious revamp
The same old restaurants have been retained inside and I have had food at quite a few of them like Eden Pavilion, Peshawri, etc in the past
Staffs are courteous and helpful. Security check is at par with all 5 star hotels in India.
Our conference was held at the back of the hotel on 1st floor with the dining facility organized inside a huge tent at the back of the premises, beyond which is the Milan Mela ground. Food quality and service was very good, nothing outstanding but very good but the lowest point of everything was the appearance of two huge flies inside the tent. They flew everywhere and happily sat on the dishes laid out for guests. I saw a fly sitting on the 'Assorted Indian Breads' !! I was aghast,as being a doctor I am aware how infections spread through flies. This being an International Conference,it was totally unwanted. Upon drawing attention to the waitstaff, they nonchalantly said, this happens at times. Later I saw a man with a pest control racket moving around among the laid out tables containing food and supposedly clean dishes.
ITC Sonar, I hate to tell you this but fly roaming about especially inside areas where food is served is unacceptable. I am being courteous in rating you very good
This was the first time I stayed at the ITC Sonar when I was in Kolkata as I usually stay at the Oberoi, but I must say I was might impressed, the front desk staff is extremely professional and the check was smooth and breezy, I was shown to my room and the room was one of the most spacious that I have stayed, the toiletries were top class, good channel selection, effective air conditioning, the breakfast at the Eden Pavilion was superb again, great variety, the quality of the south Indian breakfast was exceptional, same standard as you would get when you are in Chennai, the Hotel is nicely built with the Lotus pond around it and red fishes with their open mouths roaming carelessly, I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at the ITC Sonar and look back to staying here again in my next visit to Kolkata, great job, keep it up.
