I must admit I was pleasantly surprised with the 'Southern Plaza Hotel'. Tucked away in a residential corner of Southern Avenue, most cab drivers found it a tad bit difficult to locate it. I was there was 2 nights, and stayed in the standard economy room - the room albeit small was tastefully furnished, but could do with a bit of renovation. The only negative I have is that the wall were thin and dogs barking on the street or people chatting noisily disturbed me for a few hours, every night. The Kalighat Metro is a mere 10min walk, and can connect you to various parts of Kolkata at a fraction of a cost - though you must avoid peak times. Complimentary breakfast was a basic spread - nothing to be wow'ed about - but the service was top notch. There were only 3 to 4 tables, so the restaurant did feel cramped. There are a handful of good restaurants in the vicinity, with better views - I would recommend those. All in all, it was a good stay and I would recommend the hotel for business travellers.
